As well the rep teams were involved in their OASA champion- ships in the last two weeks with the Legion Squirts winning their pennant in the 'C' division and the Merchant Juniors winning silver at the 'B' level. Congratulations are ex- tended to both squads for another fine showing of Port Perry's fastball prow- ess. With the Squirt's tri- ~umph that now gives this association six provincial champs in the last five years. Of course, if it were not for our house league we wouldn't be afforded this fine showing, and for that I want to thank the SPORTS will continue in The Weekend Star players, their parents, the coaches and convenors, and the numerous other volunteers it takes to run a program of this size and magnitude. We had close to the same numbef of reg- 1strants this season as we did last year and it afford- ed us to run with four teams at the T-Ball level and five in seven-eight and nine-10 mites. Again we had competition with "our neighbors to the north from Greenbank and Sea- grave and amalgamated all three areas to put to- gether three youth boy squads and four youth girls' teams. When it came to the house league champion- ships we were afforded a number of good, enter- taining games. The chil- dren showed off their abil- ities and skills learned to date and from the number of smiling faces enjoyed the day as well as the med- Softball season winds down necks. 'I'his newspaper carried some of those scores and highlights in last week's copy. We endeavored to pro- vide a few new .items and programs this year start- ing with our skills devel- opment and evaluation day. Run at all three lo- cales it seemed to be well received and next year will see some refinements. Also this season we had a number of youths go through the junior devel- opment clinics to earn their stripes as umpiring officials. This also will see some fine tuning next year to enhance this pro- gram as well. As well as the on field help for the house leagues there were many in the background whose faces - we do not always see. This write-up is brought to you by XL, Gas Bar. The Merchants first game was againstVaughan. Every time these two teams meet the sparks fly and things get somewhat tense. This game was no differ- ent as Vaughan tried to get the local boys going but all it got going was the Merchants bats as they pounded out 15 runs in only three innings. With the Merchants leading by a 15-3 count, three Vaughan players were ejected from the game for foul language and leud gestures towards the umpires and Mer- chant players. The Port Perry boys are to be commended for their restraint as they wouldn't have any part in these shenanigans and were awarded the game. Marshal McQuaid was on the mound for the Mer- chants picking up the win as he struck out eight and allowed only three runs over four innings. Hitting in this game were: Ryan Williamson with a single and a triple; Ryan Hawkins had two doubles; Jason Best had two singles and a triple; Marc Versage two sin- gles; Doug Short a double, and singles by Ryan Moynes, Derek Tindall and Jon Froats. Marshal McQuaid had the big stick in this game as he kicked in with a towering home run and two singles. The Merchants next game was against Scarbo- rough with the winner moving on undefeated to Sun- day morning. Clay Brown was on the mound and went the distance picking up the win by an 11-2 score. Clay struck out five batters and was very ef- fective in keeping the opposing batters off balance inducing numerous ground ball outs. While the de- fence was taking care of the Scarborough batters the Merchant batters took care of the Scarborough pitch- ers. Hitters in this game were: Ryan Williamson with two singles and a triple; Mike Phoenix with three singles, Doug Short and Marc Versage with two sin- gles each; Ryan Hawkins with a single and a double; Clay Brown with a triple; Jon Froats with a double and singles by Jason Best and Marshal McQuaid. This win put the Merchants into Sunday on the winning side against Peterborough with the winner going to the finals and the losers going into semi- finals. This was a very exciting game that could easi- ly have gone either way but it was just not to be in the cards for the Merchants as they came out on the losing end of a 5-1 score. Bantams win bronze medals The Merchants downfall in this game came in the fourth inning with the score 0-0. A drop ball that didn't drop and boom it's out of the park and Port is down 2-0, then an error and all of a sudden its 4-0 and Peterborough is on its way to the finals. The Merchants out hit Peterborough in this game but left seven runners on base. We just couldn't get that key base hit. Jon Froats pitched the entire game and did an excellent job on the mount. Hitters in this game were: Jason Best with two singles and a walk; Derek Tindall with two walks; Ryan Williamson with a walk; Mike Phoenix with a single and a triple by Jon Froats. With the loss behind them the Merchants now took on Stouffville in the semi-finals. The Merchants put up a valiant effort but this was just not to be their day as they fell victim to Stouffville by an 8-2 score. Jason Heyworth who once pitched for Port Perry a few years ago was on the mound for Stouff- ville and he didn't allow the Merchants to get their offence in gear. Doing the hitting for the Merchants were Derek Tindall, Marc Versage, Marshal McQuaid, Mike Phoenix and Clay Brown each with singles, Jon Froats had a single and a double, and Brad Monsma picked up a walk. Clay Brown was on the mound for this game and once again did an admiral job. The loss eliminated the Merchants from any fur- ther play and they finished up with a very respecta- ble third place finish behind Peterborough and Stouffville who are two of the top Bantam teams in all of Ontario. The boys were presented very nice bronze medallions from the league. The players and coaches would hke to thank all of our loyal parents and fans who cheered us on through thick and thin and supported us throughout the season. Also thank you to our sponsors, Kirby Structures, XI. Gas Bar, Peer Pressure, Monsma Electric and Waggs Roofing. The coaches would like to give special thanks to the players. It's been a long season and we've been with these fine young men when they've been happy about a win, or a play working. Sad over a loss, in tears because they felt they let the team down and eager as they wanted to try a new play or take on a new adversary. We've been with and seen these young men in all sorts of situations and they have handled themselves with the utmost dignity at all times and have made us very proud of them. Thank you one and all it has been a pleasure to be your coaches.
