The Durham Free-Net celebrated the official opening of Durham's own computer-based commu- nity resource facility: the Durham Free-Net on Tuesday, Sept. 5. A non-profit corporation supported by contribu- tions from users, informa- tion providers and busi- nesses such as EDS Canada, the Durham Free-Net is partially fund- ed by the Ontario Govern- ent under ONIP (the On- tario Government Infrastructure Program). The Durham Free-Net allows the residents of Durham Region access to such local information as libraries, elected repre- sentatives, schools, hospi- tals and volunteer organi- zations. And it provides a link to relevant informa- tion sources provincially, nationally and interna- tionally. Its mandate is to involve citizens in direct participatory democracy through the use of this new electronic medium. Anyone with access to a computer and a modem (even that old Commodore 64 will do!) can now browse the Ajax Public Li- brary's catalogue on-line, leave a message for their Mp or MPP, research em- ployment programs avail- able from the Canada Em- ployment Centre, or look up course descriptions and timetables for their local school or college. For those who do not have access to a computer, there are public terminals located at many libraries and other community cen- tres. The goal is to be ac- cessible to every Durham Region resident within their local calling area, and regardless of whether or not they own a comput- er The Durham Free-Net 1s a volunteer, communi- ty-based organization. Participating volunteers actively determine the di- rection and content of the DFN while gaining impor- tant life and career skills. The Free-Net allows them access to the democratic process with a new and ex- citing directness. Durham FreeNet's arrived Public now has wide access to info How can you find out more about the Durham Free-Net? Brochures are available at all computer stores in the Region, and in other places where peo- ple gather - check your li- brary or supermarket bul- letin board, or ask around your school or club - some- one will know! To talk with someone about the DFN, leave a message at 905-619-6816 and a real human will return your call. If your computer is equipped with a modem, have it call the DFN at 619-1666 if you're in Ajax/ Pickering, 725-0544 in Oshawa, or 985-9536 if Port Perry is in your local calling area: log in as "guest" and look around! There will also be a series of outreach programs at li- braries in Durham Region in the fall. The Durham Free-Net provides an excellent op- portunity for the citizens of Durham Region to be- come active participants in the "Information High- way", and to influence the shape of their community.
