: ' "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Scugog Signs gets a chance By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Scugog Signs re- ceived another chance from the township's planning committee on Monday as it agreed to reconsider the compa- ny's rezoning applica- tion. Maria Mammone, property owner, and Scugog Signs owner Ron Haslam, asked the committee for a chance to start the process over again. Mrs. Mammone told council she and her husband planned to go to the OMB if the pro- cess was not given an- otherlook. The committee, with the exception of Region- al Councillor Marilyn Pearce agreed to the re- quest. The committee also learned that Mr. Has- lam had spent upwards of $13,000 on improve- ments to the building prior to the denial of the rezoning. Scugog Council earli- er this month denied a rezoning application to allow the industry to operate at its Nestleton location. Construction starts next month Council gives nod for 20,000 square foot warehouse By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Construction will begin next month on a 20,000 square foot warehouse fa- cility as an outlet for Yan- kee Candles. Old Port Marketing Ltd., owned and operated by Tom and Daphne Mitchell, acquired the worldwide distribution * rights to the product. Old Port Marketing has taken the candles to number one in Canada in 10 years of exclusive national distri- bution. According to the Mitch- ell's Yankee Candles's ob- jective is to position its product as the world's leading brand of gift wor- thy scented candles. Dis- tribution channels have already been set up in Ger- many, Benolux, France and Britain. The Mitchells, along with architect Denny Bryan, appeared briefly Style Sale before the township's planning committee on Monday and received wholehearted approval. Construction on the building, to be located in Success Industrial Park, also owned by the Mitch- ells, is expected to get un- derway October 6. If all goes according to plan the company should be up and running by the end of Feb- ruary next year at the lat- est. Old Port Marketing cur- rently employs three doz- en people and the new building will create addi- tional jobs in the manage- ment, administrative and materials handling. Mr. Mitchell said local tradespeople will also be given fair opportunity to bid on tenders for con- struction of the facility. "We are not going to give it as a gift, but if they are competitive they'll get it," he said. e Vard Canadian Tire Parking Lot Saturday September 23 Sunday September 24 8:00 a.m. Summer End Clearance Merchandise that just won't last!
