wh PIRATE EP CREST ar Es TY TaN 2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 19, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Sod-turning is held for PPHS house project A year of hard work and careful planning paid off last week for Port Perry High School, when a sod: turning for a new con- struction project was held. The event Friday after- noon didn't mark the be- ginning of a new wing for the school, though; it was the first step toward a new home that will be built by 16 senior students over the next several months. The three bedroom bun- galow is to be built on a va- cant Rosa St. lot, directly across from the high school. The project, under the supervision of con- struction technology teacher Lawrence Heatlie, will earn the 16 students four credits -- two for con- struction, and two co-op credits -- each, and when it's done, the house is ex- ected to fetch between $175,000 and $179,000. That money will be used to pay off a loan extended the students by the Dur- ham Region Board of Edu- cation. Trustees approved the project and financing last spring after presenta- tion of a detailed business plan by kids from PPHS. Mr. Heatlie said Friday afternoon the school is faced with the challenge of incorporating ~ broad- based technology in its for the whole family Port Perry Dental Centre is proud to provide its patients with state of the art care in a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere, and also offer these services. "This fits the bill per- fectly," he said. "this way (students) get to see the whole thing pieced togeth- er. "It's also showing local people prospective em- ployees," he added, ex- plaining that a number of local contractors and sup- pliers have offered their services at reduced rates. Excavation on the lot was to begin yesterday, and shortly after that the student workers were to begin installing blocks for a basement and founda- tion. It's hoped the bulk of the home can be raised by the end of the first semes- ter. Principal Sandra Riches, who has been a booster of the project from the out- set, said Friday that stu- dents have been involved in all aspects of the project so far, and will continue to be as it nears completion. Similar projects have been undertaken else- where in Ontario, but nev- er in Durham Region or Metro Toronto, she said.
