It can be time-consuming and expensive trying to take care of anti-freeze, battery or snow tires at the last minute when everyone else in the neighborhood is rushing to do the same thing. To help car owners get ahead of the game, the Car Care Council of the Auto- motive Industries Associa- tion of Canada offers "stitch in time" checklist. 1. Cooling System: If it hasn't been done in a while, flush it out with a good chemical cleaner and install fresh anti-freeze. Note: Use in proper pro- portion. Pure anti-freeze, (ethylene giycol), does not cool or protect as well as the proper mixture pre- scribed on the container. 91 GMC SONOMA GT EXT. Battery and Electrical System: If your battery is more than a few years old, have it checked. Cold weather is hard on batter- ies. Be sure connections are clean and tight. Cor- roded or loose connections can give the symptoms of a weak or dead battery. 3. Engine: Is it time for a tune-up? Faulty wiring, worn spark plugs, a stick- ing choke or emission con- trol devices that need at- tention all can lead to hard starting. A diagnostic check-up of the engine can be a good pre-winter in- vestment. 4. Oil and Filter: Dirty oil can give you trouble in the winter. Now's the time jump on cold weather to change it. Change the oil filter, too. Your car may have several other filters that need changing at this time, including the fuel, air and transmission fil- ters. (The latter is changed when transmis- sion fluid is changed as a periodic maintenance pro- cedure.) 5. Tires: For every five degrees C, (10 degrees F) of temperature drop, your tire pressure decreases by one pound. Obviously, if you haven't checked tire pressure since last sum- mer, they're likely to be several pounds under- inflated. Periodic rotating of tires, along with' wheel alignment and balancing, all contribute to longer tire life. Poor vision is tied to night time accidents Improved highway markings and better auto- motive lighting are help- ing to hold down night time traffic accidents, but the after dark fatality rate 1s still nearly triple the daytime rate. While driver condition (visual acuity, sobriety and other factors) is a big factor in this statis- tical phenomenon, car con- dition also plays a major role. A large number of cars have one or more lights out or have deficien- cies in the windshield wip- ers and/or washer system. With intensified public awareness measures this could be prevented. Any- one capable of driving should be able to check his or her lights, windshield wipers and washers peri- odically. It is irresponsible to endanger people's lives through simple vehicle ne- glect. With the fastest grow- ing segment of our driving population, the older driv- er, another factor becomes very important. Ninety per cent of all sensory in- put needed to drive comes through the eyes. But as our eyes change with age, your sensitivity to glare increases, you need more illumination and you'll find you won't adapt as well to the dark. Also, you'll lose some of your pe- ripheral vision. It makes sense at any age to reduce your vulner- ability to an accident. Be sure you can see and be seen after dark! r TOWNSHIP OF SCUGOG Scugog Arena ===) | Public Programs Public Skating Cost: $2.00/general admission - $5.00/family (max. 5) Times: Sundays 2:00 - 3:15 p.m. Daytime Programs Shinny Hockey Cost: $3.50/session or $35.00 season pass Times: Parents and Tot Skate Mondays and Wednesdays 11:30 - 1:00 p.m. Cost: Times: Adult Skate $2.00/session or $20.00 season pass Mon 1:00 - 2:30p.m., Wed 9:00 - 10:30a.m., Thurs 12:00 - 1:00p.m. Cost: $2.00/session or $20.00 season pass Times: Thursdays 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. For more information on these and other programs, please call Arena at 985-8698.
