This coming Sunday is "Wear a Hat" (sorry boys, no wearing hats upstairs in church). so find an interesting hat and join your friends at Sun- day School. Next Sunday will be "muffins and coffee" before church at 10:15 a.m. On Wednesday, Oct. 4 the Fi- delas Unit will meet in the church school room with guest speakers, Carol Young and Sherry Telford of Bobcaygeon. All ladies of the community are welcome. As you know that in 1996 the Greenbank Church will cele- brate its 100th anniversary. The Fidelas Unit U.C.W. is put- ting together a history book of these years with Ruby Beare, Ruth Foster and many more do- ing the research and compiling of it. If you have or know where the committee could obtain pic- tures of church groups or infor- mation of the early years please call Ruby at 985-7746 or Shirley at 985-8926. If you have artifacts pertain- ing to the years of the church Greenbank and would share them with oth- ers please call Shirley at 985- 8926. A get together gathered at the home of her daughter Betty Heard's, Oshawa, to help Pearl Couves celebrate her 80th birth- day on Aug. 27. Her sister Jean- nett Montgomery, Guelph, pro- vided musical entertainment. All seven grandchildren were there plus little great- granddaughter Melissa Dobson. Her granddaughter, Denise (Re- esor) Bell, of Greenbank made and decorated the cake. A deli- cious pot luck dinner concluded a very enjoyble and happy after- noon for 25 present. The fall project for the 4-H Club is photography, so if you wish to join and need more infor- mation please call Doreen at 985-8318. The September meeting of the Women's Institute was held last Thursday at the home of Muriel Gibson. Mrs. Barbara Evans of the Bethesda Reach W.I. was guest speaker and told of her trip to the Associated Country Women of the World (A.C. W.W.) convention held in Christ- church New Zealand last Febru- ary. It was not only a time to see the beautiful country but to be able to talk and listen to women of the world and hear of their needs and concerns for their home country. After a contest on sayings we know Muriel served alovely lunch. Brian and Janice Lee, Murray and Shirley Lee spent the week- end in Sauble Beach where they attended the lovely wedding of Kevin Walker and Patti Yager and enjoyed visiting with family members. | Thought for the week: Forbid- den fruit is responsible for many abadjam. Area's youth off to universities Many from this area attended the International Ploughing Match held this year near Ayre, Ontario or the Lindsay Fair or both. From all reports both were very successful and the weath- er, which the early forecasts predicted to be so very wet and miserable at the beginning of the week, really turned out to be delightful autumn days. What a delightful variety of courses at locations both near and far our post-secondary stu- dents are studying. Hereis a list of students from this area. If you have been missed please let me know and these names will be in another list next week. Sharri Masterson is attend- ing the University of Saskatche- wan, Saskatoon, College of Law. Sheryl Gibson is in her fifth year at York University study- ing Rehabilitation. Jeff Kemp is in his second year and Todd Moore in his first year, both studying Agriculture in the OAC at University of Guelph. Also at Guelph are Mike Leach and Heather Chap- man each in their first year and Jennifer Byers in her second year. Jennifer Lee in her third year at Laurier University in an Honors Business Course. Susan Kyte is in her third year in Nursing Science at Uni- versity of Toronto while Jill Van Camp is in her fourth year at Queens University, Kingston studying Physiotherapy. Erin Larmer is at McMaster University in Hamilton study- ing Social Sciences. Tim Masterson is attending the DeVry Institute, Toronto studying Electronic Technolo- Andrew Wilson is in his sec- ond year at Mohawk College in Law and Security. Michelle Morton is in her sec- ond year at Wilfred Laurier in History. Ken Wilson is at Univeristy of Waterloo. Stephen Kyte and Donnie Cliffare at Durham College. "Stacey Swain in her first year at Ryerson in Toronto while Lisa Gilbank and Amanda Walsh are both at Mitchener In- stitute in Toronto. At Lakehead Universi- ty, Thunder Bay are Jason Cliff, Jennifer Wilson and Mark Sim- mons, all in their second year of their studies. Dana Lee isin her first year of Concurrent Education at Trent University. Kim Mountjoy also studies at Trent University. Robyn Cliff is studying at the Scarborough Campus of the University of Toronto. The afternoon unit of the Blackstock UCW met at the home of Marion Larmer on Sept. 12. Nine members answered the Roll Call - a summer memory proving we all had a good sum- mer. Audrey Wright led in wor- ship on the topic - Come as a Child. We all need to be enthu- siastic, adventurous, single- minded and gather treasures every day and give of ourselves toothers. Thelma Wright showed a vid- eo-Irrepresible McClure on Dr. Bob McClure. After retirement as our Moderator, Dr. Bob and his wife went to Borneo, Zaire and China to talk to the high school students and other groups with his challenging top- ic "I have a Calling, I was put on the earth to do something." He certainly lived up to his calling. A benediction closed the meet- ng. There were 10 tables at the weekly card party with the fol- lowing winners - Harold Craw- ford, Norman Rohrer, Teresa Berkers, Sarah Brunton, Ber- nice Renton, Edna Nimigon, Myrtle Gimblett. For further details call Barb Byers 986-5112. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! . ..Friends and family gathered in Greenbank recently to mark the 80th birthday of of Pearl Couves. In addition to cake and best wishes, Mrs. Couves received greetings from the Prime Minister, and the Premier of Ontario. Fall beef supper is planned for Oct. 27 Church and Sunday School this week will be held in Epsom Church at 9:30 a.m. This is Worldwide Communion Sun- day and also the week for contri- butions to the Food Bank. This being the first Sunday of the month, there will be a cele- bration in song for interested people of all ages which will be held in Utica Church at 7 p.m. If you enjoy learning new songs and singing then you will enjoy this evening with Norm and Heather. The Church Board will be holding a Fall Beef Supper in Utica Hall on Friday, Oct. 27. Advance tickets are $10 ($12 at the door), $5 for children under 12 and under 5's are free. Get your tickets early and mark this date on your calendar. Utica Hall Board will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 3at 8 p.m. I'had a visit from a gentleman this past week. Ralph Veitch, who now lives in Uxbridge, in- formed me that he will be hav- ing his 90th birthday on Octo- ber 1. Ralph and his late wife lived for many years in the Ep- som area before retiring to live in town, but still would like all his friends and former neigh- bours to know of this memora- ble occasion. Congratulations and Happy Birthday. On October 3, Mrs. K. Crosier will be having her 97th birth- day. This is a remarkable wom- an who still does her preserves, pickles and gardening and we all wish her a Happy birthday. There were 13 tables of eu- chre on Friday night in Utica with winners as follows: Ladies first: Edna Meyers, second: Irene Elson, third: Berneice Wells. Men's first: George Harp- er, second Clifford Rodd, third: Phyllis Pegg. Freeze-out win- ners were Ruth McDonald and Carolyn Parish, Ed and Ruth Skinner were second. Draws were won by Ruth Skinner, Bill Butters, and Clifford Rodd. Berthy Cottyn won the 50/50. There will be another euchre in two weeks, Oct. 6. Brittany Wilbur spent the weekend with her grandpar- ents Carol and Hillis. Keith and Faye Ashton were Sunday luncheon guests with his mother Ruth. We send sincere sympathy to Doug Hart in the passing of his mother Aileen this past week. Services were held from Low and Low in Port Perry with in- terment in Kendall Cemetery on Friday.
