PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR HISTORY REVISITED - Paul Arculus presented a lecture on local history at the Museum Church last Thursday evening. The historic old church, with quaint lighting and warmed by a wood stove, provided the perfect setting for this informative A paid attendance of over 80 met last Thursday at the Head Church on the Museum grounds to hear the first in the series of talks on the history of Lake Scu- gog Basin. A capacity audience listened as local historian Paul Arculus presented the first in his series of three talks on local history for the Lake Scugog Historical Socie- ty. In this first talk, Mr. Arculus gave details of the early pre-history of this area and the background of the Mississaugas' settlement of the Scugog Basin. He detailed the horrors of the experiences of the Indians at the hands of the Americans in the Post- Revolutionary period, and the problems which con- fronted the First Nations in what is now Canada as they encountered the arrival of the white man. Mr. Arculus outlined the problems with treaties signed with the white man and the fact that there are many problems still to be dealt with in Indian land claims. The basic problem lay in the fact that the In- dian had no understanding of the white man's con- cept of ownership of land, he said. He went on to describe the origins of the present Lake Scugog, reading a diary account of an 1827 jour- ney on the original Lake Scugog. This was before the lake was doubled in size in the period from 1829 to 1830. Mr. Arculus' presentation included the tragic story of story of the "Speedy" which resulted from the first ° survey of Lake Scugog, undertaken in 1804 by John Stegman. A copy of that survey was on hand for the audience to see. Reuben Crandell and other early settlers were giv- en credit though various accounts including obituar- ies and diaries. The next talk in the series will take place at the Museum Church on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. This second talk will focus on Peter Perry and Cana- da's first Reform Party, Joseph Bigelow, and the ori- gins of the economicbase for the Lake Scugog Basin. series of historic talks.
