SHOWROOM 193 North St. PORT PERRY 985-4910 Planned Oct. 19 in Oshawa Manning will be speaker at Reform 'Crisis in Crime' rally By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star "Crisis in Crime" will be the theme of a Reform Party rally featuring a keynote address by leader Preston Manning Oct. 19. The gathering, which gets started at 7:30 p.m. in Oshawa's Civic Auditorium, will focus on the failings of Canada's justice system and the ways in which pressure can be brought to bear in Ottawa to change all that, said Evert Vroegh, president of the Durham Reform riding association. "The crisis in the criminal justice system is one of the most important issues in the country right now," Mr. Vroegh said last week. "Nobody can be complacent. Nobody can sit back." He said Reformers have fought for -- and won -- some measures in Ottawa to toughen the gov- ernment's stance on crime and punishment, but there is more work to be done. The Liberal govern- ment's "enormous effort" to bring in what Reformers see as a flawed attempt at gun legislation is an indication politicians are headed in the wrong direction justice issues, said Mr. Vroegh. "The Reform Party intends to keep up the pres- sure to bring about real justice reform," he said. He pointed to a number of initiatives that are being pursued by Reform MPs, including: a Tougher measures for young offenders; a Reform to the parole system, a Enhancement of victims' rights, and a Deportation of non-Canadians convicted of crimes. Bike Tour that started in Ottawa on Aug. 12. rt The tour concluded at Canada's Wonderland on Sept. 17, when both Peel and Durham Police offi- cers rode a 60 km bike course. The Durham Re- gional Police participants were able to raise more than $7,000, outdistanc- ing Peel officers in the ef- fort. Part of the competition was that the losing force had to fly the others' police flag; therefore Peel police will be flying the Durham Regional Police Flag at their headquarters. It's all part of the fun of the event, which is in its seventh year and has raised over $7 million.
