Hospital administrator Dave Brown said last week that he and his staff are bracing for cuts to their budget which vided to the community. "They're (the province) talking 10 per cent," Mr. Brown said. "that's very significant. "If we had to take 10 per cent out of our budget, that's $600,000; that's a lot of money." Health care has become one of the most hotly-debated topics as the new Progressive Conservative government gives indications of just how far it will go to meet its goal of lowering the provincial deficit and giving Ontarians a 30 per cent tax break, both election promises of Premier Mike Harris. "I think somebody is speculating." { What is undeniable, though, is that the #8 Tories are intent on cutting costs, and the yl "health sector will not BROWN be spared. That means community hospitals such as Port Perry's will be under increasing pres- sure to provide services for less. "If we have to deal with a 10 per cent budget cut, that causes me great concern," said Mr. Brown. He said that Community Memorial will continue to provide the kind of primary care the community has come to expect, but a new kind of partnership has to be struck with hospital users. In essence, people will have to con- serve their hospital resources, said Mr. Brown. that means avoiding unnec- essary trips to the emergency ward, and other measures to help the hospital operate within tight budgetary guide- lines. "It really is quite important the public understand this," he said.
