rm em cm fe -- ae ln -- 22- PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 11, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SProrTs The Pineridge Sports Atom hockey team has hit the ice and this year's team looks great! Team members are Peter Konstantinopoulous, Andrew Fancy, Justin Shinn, Wes Langmaid, Tyler Weisflock, Tony Boomsma, Tyler Lee, Pierce Jones, Stuart Cochrane, B.J. Shaump, Garrett Brown, Stormy Wootton, Ryan Hnatko, Justin Koury, Jesse Mullins and Joey Lane. What a lineup! On Oct. 1 the team visited the Oshawa Little NHL Blackhawks for an exhibition game. Despite this being the day after final team selection, the players played well. The game ended in a 4-4 tie with some very exciting mo- ments! Still without a first practice to get or- ganized, our skaters played their sea- son opener in Port Perry on Oct. 5 against a well practiced, powerful team from Orono. The resulting loss was pre- dictable. However, during this game our team displayed great character and never gave up. This made the coaches very happy. Our second league game was a differ- ent story. On Oct. 7 our Pineridge team travelled to Lindsay and showed what they can do after a bit of practice. They were great! During the first period, the action was hot and heavy between the two well matched teams until Ryan Hnatko skated over the centre ice line and sur- prised the Lindsay goalie with a 75 foot wrist shot. Shortly thereafter they re- plied with the equalizer. Not to be out- done Ryan Hnatko snapped another one into the net on a fine set-up pass from Stormy Wootton. Once again, Atom 2s start strong Lindsay tied it up. Now Stuart Co- chrane and B.J. Schaump decided to get in on the act, with Stu scoring on a neat set-up from B.J. The Lindsay team started the second period off quickly, scoring just after the opening faceoff, then again a minute later. It looked like they had us in deep trouble. Did Pineridge give up? Not a chance. Although Lindsay tried many times to score again, the dynamic goaltending duo of Andrew Fancy and Peter "Beezer" Konstantinopoulous slammed the door shut. Defencemen Wes Lang- maid, Justin Shinn, Joey Lane and Jus- tin Koury made many outstanding plays, blocking shots and setting up our forwards for scoring plays. Stormy Wootton got the team back on track with an excellent individual ef- fort, forechecking the puck away from their defence then slipping one past a surprised Lindsay goalie. Soon after- ward, Pierce Jones drifted one in on a nifty pass from Stu Cochrane. Finally B.J. Schaump grabbed the rebound on a hard point shot from Wes Langmaid and blasted it in for our last goal. Final score, Pineridge Atoms 6 - LIndsay 4. Man, what a game! Everyone watching the contest agreed that our Pineridge team played smart hockey. They were always In their positions, ready to defend our goalies, then move the puck quickly down the ice to score. Good teams are known for this kind of play and this team showed they can do it. Keep tuned for more Pineridge Sports Atoms game reports! Close match between Laurentian, Lumbermen The second game proved to be a much closer match between Laurentian Bank and Scugog Lumber. Lau- rentian got on the board first with a strong shift from the line of Chris Wy- garde, Steve Guthrie and Matt Fish who got two goals a minute apart both unassisted from Steve and Chris. Not to be left be- hind, Scugog Lumber came right back the next shift to nail a three way passing play and get right back in the game. Michael Kelly, Zuly, Greenway, Bruce BARRISTERS AND SOLICITORS Motor Vehicle - Criminal - Personal Injury Wills - Real Estate - Family Law Corporate & Commercial Evenings and Weekends By Appointment 114 King St. E., Oshawa 723-2278 (Al -------------------------------------- Whelan got the goal with the assists going to Lucas Fraser and David McGar- ry. At the 7:34 mark of the second period Scugog Lumber tied the game with a nice goal from Tra- vis Black with the assist going to Mark Schinkel. That was short lived when Laurentian's Jessie Mis- chitian when down on a break away and caught the bottom corner on the short side. Chris Milligan got the assist to what end- 1 ed up to be the game win- ner. After that it seemed the defence for both teams took over, they stood tall and strong on the line and cleared their ends with precision and when they were unable to do that the goaltending from Scugog's Brady Gray and Lauren- tian's Tyler Webb finished the job by stopping every- thing else that came their way. An exciting game to wake the parents on an early Saturday morning, good job guys!! Compton Cable Novice are off to a great start The Compton Cable Novice hockey team has gotten off to a great start for the 95/96 season. The boys and girls have been working hard at practices and the hard work has paid off as they won their first league game against Omemee last Friday night here at home. There was good end to end action throughout the entire game. Kyle Geer and Sam Bennett shared goaltending duties and came up with a shutout. Defense played very well as Michael Redman, Todd Lance and Trevor Doe cleared the puck well from in front of the net. There was no scoring in the game until 1:31 left in the third period when Danny Halward put one high over the shoulder of the Omemee goalie with well deserved assists go- ing to Haley Campbell and Craig Simmonds. On Thanksgiving Mon- day the team travelled to Oshawa for an exhibition game against the Minor Novice Blackhawks of the LNHL. Kyle and Sam once again teamed up for a shutout. There was no scoring in the first period as both teams were a little slow getting fired up. Port turned it up a notch and scored five unan- swered goals in the second period and added one in the third to post the 6-0 win. Matthew Charron led the way with a hat trick. Nice shooting Matt. Craig Simmonds picked up two goals and an assist with Jake Jones picking up three assists. Brett Sim- monds picked up a nice goal and an assist also.
