Trus- tees typically review such material, but are not re- quired to give it passage. Reduce the Risk was drawn up by Durham board of education staff and then approved by the Family Life Education Ad- visory Committee (FLEAC), which is com- prised of educators, par- ents, and community pro- fessionals. [It was also approved by sclectod stu dent and parent commit, tees, undergoing revisions along the way. But Uxbridge trustee Faith Neumann objected to the paper, and its sug- gested methods, and called for a vote to reject it. That vote was successful at the committee level two itself weeks ago, and was up- held by the full board last Tuesday. Mrs. Neumann said that while AIDS education 1s important, the Reduce the Risk paper falls short. "If you get AIDS, you will die," she said. "The youth of today have to know about AIDS, but the (board) document isn't fac- tual enough. "Kids should receive practical information and if we make light of (sex), they won't get the full ef- fect of the message." Those who lobbied strenuously against Re- duce the Risk felt the paper trivialized and even encouraged sexual activi- ty among the young people for whom it was intended, said Mrs. Switzer, who fin- ished second in her run for Tues. & Thurs. 12:45 - 3:45 gtonemnoor Stonemoor Day Care Contact Diane 985-0800 Stonemoor Day Care has limited openings for children 15 months to 5 years. "When sex 1s presented as a game, 1t becomes a game to the kids," she sald. she is ready to push for a program that stress- es abstinence as the only definite and acceptable safe sex approach. And she believes that kids are ready to accept abstinence. "They want to hear something different; they are ready for another mes- sage," said Mrs. Switzer. "I think we need to ride with it; it's trendy. Let's go with it, and save our kids." Mrs. Drew noted that throughout the board's proposed curriculum, ab- stinence is repeatedly mentioned as the only cer- tain deterrent for sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy. But information ought to be provided for those young people who decide to become sexually active, she said. "I think as a board of ed- ucation we have to be re- sponsible to all the kids in our system," said Mrs. Drew. "As a board I think we feel that if that (sexual ac- tivity) is the path they choose, they should do it with open eyes and they should protect them- selves." 20 Litre - 5285 Latex Primer 46.99 20 litre- 5300 Latex Flat White 47.99 Exterior Spred House Gloss Latex 3900 line 28.95 TL Glidden 4 litre Stain Solid or Semi 18.99 Cetol 1 Cetol 23 sikkens SIKKENS STAIN Cetol Dek 38.
