The sub-committee, created by the Scugog Centre Advisory Board to oversee the promotional and funding aspects of the hall and future develop- ment of Scugog Centre, has raised more than half of its goal of $100,000 for the community hall. The committee, consist- ing of Kennedy Self, Bob Hull, Sean Fewer and Jim McMillan, is hoping dona- tions to the centre will in- crease over the next six months. According to Mr. Hull, the fundraising for the community centre has been going slower than they expected, but they are hoping it picks up dur- ing the winter. Many groups have made monetary donations to the centre, and other or- ganizations have ap- proached the committee with offers of free services, equipment and furnish- ings for the hall. Several fundraisingide- as are in the works for the hall, including a raffle for a quilt and a beautifica- tion project to make the outside of the building more attractive. Both drives will be kicked off at the official opening on Oc- tober 20. The prime drive for the committee right now is to raise funds to finish the parking lot, to add new signage and to complete landscaping around the exterior of the building, said Mr. Hull. By creating a more at- tractive building more people will want to rent the building for occasions such as weddings or par- ties. The beautification pro- ject will begin with a tree selling campaign where individuals, companies and organizations can make a donation and pur- chase a tree for the build- ing. "A Gift That Grows", is the theme of the cam- paign. Mr. Hull said the hope is that donations will be ac- cepted over the winter months and come spring they will be able to begin planting trees and shrubs. A special plaque is being created for the inside of the hall to recognize all do- nors to the community centre. The community hall is considered the first phase in a master plan for Scu- gog Centre, which would see the arena joined to the existing ball diamonds and soccer pitches through a series of foot- bridges. The master plan also includes a second ice pad, aquatic centre, fit- ness room, tennis courts, playground and picnic ar- eas. When the committee reaches its $100,000 goal for phase one of the project they can begin to focus on future expansion to the centre. The $100,000 is what the committee expects it to take to have the hall ful- ly up and functional. Once that is complete and the rental income takes care of the mainte- nance and cost of operat- ing the hall, the commit- tee can look further ahead in their long-term plans. "The completion of phase one is the means to expansion around the cen- tre," Mr. Hull said.
