Mark this date on your calendar CTC Midget 'B' fight way to 5-4 win at Omemee The Canadian Tire Mid- get B team travelled to OPS last week to play their first game this year against Omemee and had to fight their way to a 5-4 win. The Islanders played well in the first period but didn't get on the score- board until there was only 59 seconds left in the sec- ond period. Dave Kaminga scored Port's goal on a great unassisted effort. Omemee was leading the game 3-0 by the end of the second and before ending the period a fight broke out on theice when an Om- emee player charged our goalie Doug Short. Before the period was over Ome- mee was less five players and we were short four. In the third period Port took control of the game and at the 12:11 mark Ashley Vanschelven scored with an assist com- ing from Ryan Puckrin. Less than a minute lat- er Todd Parry scored after converting a great passing play from linemates Matt Blowe and Adam Smith. Then Smith and Parry tied the game at four a piece on another great passing play. Todd got our winning goal at 3:04 when he made a nifty move on the Ome- mee defenseman and caught the goaltender napping. The assists on this goal came from de- fenseman Trevor Smith and Chris Drury. Brian Bickmore played between the pipes for the first half of the game and Doug Short for the second. Both boys made a number of great saves and Doug gets the prize for the most shots (literally) on him. The boys came home happy, but the coaches were not pleased with hav- ing to play four players short for at least one more game, maybe more. Peewee 'A' Legionaires win first tournament of season Port Perry's Peewee "A" Rep hockey team entered their first tournament of the season, Oct. 14/15 in Stirling and were reward- ed for their outstanding shorthanded effort by win- ning their Divisional Championship with four straight wins in which they allowed just two goals. Besides their champion- ship game opponent, Col- lingwood, the other teams were from Peterborough, Prince - Edward County, Uxbridge, St. Catharine's, Pickering, Stirling and Mississauga. The Legionaires outhus- tled the Collingwood squad at every turn and gave excellent protection to their goalies Chris Mon- sma and Carl Evans. Scott Brownson notched a hat-trick" with Steve Wy- gerde, Sean Jeffrey (slap- per) and Matt MacMaster balancing out the goals. Assists were by Braden Tarbotton (2), - Grant Hooker, Mark Blakely, Dane Gray, Sean Jeffrey, David Justynski, Matt MacMaster and Steve Wy- gerde. Excellent five man passing in the offensive zone complemented dedi- cated back checking and forechecking to ensure a 6- 0 win for their injured comrades. Jason Whitworth was injured on Saturday and required emergency sur- gery in Trenton. Well- wishes were passed on to Jason and his parents for a speedy recovery. Dean oh ; ¥ RR RR KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR THEY'RE OFF: Area elementary school kids descended on Port Perry's soccer fields last Wednesday afternoon for the Lisa Carlson Memorial cross- country run, hosted by S.A. Cawker. Col. E. Farwell school was the team winner, with Cawker coming in second. On Oct. 12 the Pineridge Sports Atoms tough at a tournament in Parry Sound. Game one saw them play Glanbrook (Hamilton) and come out on the short end of a 6-0 score. This game was a lot closer than the score indicates. Game two Port played the host, Parry Sound team. Port boys jumped into an early 1- 0 lead on a goal from Jesse Mullins. Even the good defensive work by Wes Langmaid, Justin Koury, Garrett Brown and Joey Lane could not keep the powerful Parry Sound team off the scoresheet. The boys did shut them out in the Atoms in Parry Sound tournament third period. Game three was an exciting one with the Pineridge boys losing 2-1 to Mississauga. We had many chances to tie this one but good saves and bad luck would not let it happen. Both goalies played a strong game. Way to go Andrew and Peter. Tyler Lee who had a strong tournament scored Ports only goal on a nice rush and deke on the goalie. All the boys learned a lot this weekend and should show the effects in the next few weeks. fensive triangle. VanCamp had to watch from the press-box as he recovers from his recent surgery. In game one of the tour- nament, the Legionaires crushed the Rochester Amerks opponents by an 8-0 score. Jason Whit- worth was a one man wrecking crew for Port as he scored four first period goalsincluding a stick side wrist shot and a top corner slapshot on the glove side. David Justynski and Grant Hooker earned as- gists. Dane Gray did some good penalty killing and Chris Skerratt just missed on a rebound in the first period as well. The Rochester boys played a little better in the second and kept the Le- gionaires off the score- sheet. Mark Blakely was: robbed on a top corner power play shot. With Rochester having a two man advantage goalie Chris Monsma made two excellent saves while Bra- den Tarbotton did good work at the top of the de- David handed out two solid body- checks to make the Amerks hesitant about en- tering our zone. Matt Mac- Master did some nifty stickhandling in the peri- od. The team dominated the third period with goals by Scott Brownson (re- bound off Matt's shot), Chris Skerratt (from Grant and Steven Wy- gerde off a face-off), Dane (from Matt and Jason af- ter Dane was left all alone in front) and Matt from Scott with just 25 seconds left in the game. With time winding down, Carl Evans made a good save to preserve the shutout. Our goaltending and penalty killing was hot when called on throughout as we incurred five more penalties than the Amerks. Game two was a nailbit- er against Prince Edward county with our "Blue and Gold" squad prevailing by a 2-1 margin despite play- ing the game essentially with just six forwards. In the scoreless first pe- riod Port killed off a five minute major against the P.E.C. team who played a much more physical style than Rochester. Scott and Braden missed on two good opportunities. Port opened the scoring in the second period as Scott got the puck to Tim Turnto Page 29
