oT ~~ AHI = RE SERA RR wad "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 17, 1995 - 29 SPORTS Malmot Atoms still undefeated Friday the 13th was un- lucky for Lindsay as they went down to defeat in Port against the Malmont Farm Atoms. Mark Dun- can opened the scoring af- ter Justin Moffatt set him up with a quick pass. Two of the defencemen Michael Thompson and Derek Bond made good passes to set up Kevin Robins for the second goal. Kevin then joined with Trevor Lance to assist in a goal by Spencer Churchill. Trevor and Spencer were very ac-' tive later in the game as they assisted in two goals by Jeff Tarbotton. It was a frustrating night for Lind- say as they spent much of their time in the penalty box and managed to score only three times due in part to the great goaltend- ing by Mark Lott. Final score 5-3. Port Perry's Malmont Farm Atoms remain unde- feated after travelling through the fog on the 14th to Trenton beating the Hawks 14-0. Scott Honey earned the shutout with strong play between the pipes. Justin Moffatt started the scoring early in the first period with assis- tance from Chet Martin. By the end of the period, five more unassisted goals were scored by Port. Steve MacLennan worked hard behind the net to set up a goal by Spencer Churchill. Then a great play, begin- ning from the defensive pass of Derek Bond to Tre- vor Lance, resulted in a classic goal by Jeff Tarbot- ton. Justin potted another after a series of passes from Steve MacLennan and Geoff Simpson. Pat Lewis got into the action with a goal assisted by Ge- off and Michael Thomp- son. To finish out the first period, another length of the ice play resulted in Jeff scoring from Trevor and Jamie Smith. During much of the game, Trenton played short handed due to nu- merous penalties with several instances where Malmont had a two player advantage. However, in the second period, during a rare time that Malmont was shorthanded, Pat scored assisted by Geoff" and Dylan Harper. As the second period drew to a close, Mark Duncan got on the board with a nice goal assisted by Steve and Spencer. With less than a minute in that period, Spencer scored unassisted and then Mark got his sec- ond assisted by Spencer and Chet. Justin exploded in the third period with two more goals scored during a sin- gle shift, one unassisted and the other with help from Pat. Excellent hustle on the part of winger Ke- vin Robins resulted in many near misses includ- ing turnovers for his line- mates. Trevor continued to hammer Trenton's second goalie with an unassisted goal. Just before the buzz- er sounded due to curfew, Chet finished the scoring with some solid passes from Mark and Steve. Legionaires win From Page 28 Jones at the right point. Dane Gray scored on Tim's rebound. In the third period, things looked good when Mark scored after good forechecking by Matt. Braden, Scott and David had some further good chances while Grant, Sean Jeffrey and David were rocksteady on defence. With three minutes left, P.E.C. pressed and pulled their goalie at the end and their pressure resulted in several faceoffs in our end plus a win-saving stop by Carl in goal with seconds left on the clock. This was a tight win that should build the "character" of the team as they work towards mesh- ing together. Game three was a come- from-behind 3-1 win over the host Stirling team. The story of the game was a super goaltending dis play by our opponents goalie. Stirling led 1-0 after two periods despite lots of Port Perry forechecking pres- sure and many shots. Ear- ly in the third the Legion- aires broke through when Braden scored off David's shot. David scored himself from the high slot on a wrist shot (assist by Bra- den). Mark scored an insu- rance top shelf goal after Chris Skerratt hustled to a loose puck and fed it over. Good Port Perry penalty killing and avoidance of stupid penalties also con- tributed to the "Blue and Gold" win which put them in their divisional champi- onship game against Col- hingwood Hawks. The team and parents would also like to wish coach Teno's wife a quick recovery from her urgent surgery as well and appre- crate his devotion to duty in coming out for the tour- nament. The persistence of Todd Stirling and Mike Pigeau led the 19-year-old talent to Port Perry and Barkwell has since been a continuous primary force in the ModJacks arsenal. Indeed, the Oshawa resident has given the coaching staff a consistent dose of intestinal fortitude, an attribute which has translated to equalizer by Pigeau early in the third which eventually forced the brief extra period. Barkwell started the year with the hopes of making the Tier II Oshawa Legionaires, but as one of the late cuts due to his admitted "lack of conditioning," he turned his attention to the college level. "I was going to play at Seneca, but Todd and (Pigeau) talked me into coming to Port Perry," recalls Barkwell, a former high school play- er in Oshawa with Ontario finalist Eastdale Eagles. He also played "AAA" major midget hockey with the Oshawa Kiwanis. were selfish because others couldn't get on the ice." MoJacks were without the ser- vices of Ryan Ridgeway, who is sit- ting out a two-game suspension and the same will apply to captain Gavin Cochrane for the second time this year after being slapped a major and game for checking from behind on Sunday with only 51.3 seconds left in overtime. Leslie and Todd Dennis missed on golden scoring opportunities during the extra period, thwarted by a pes- ky goalie Mark Cairns. Port Perry puckstopper Paul Roberts was the best player on the key points on the scoresheet. On Friday, the ModJacks' specialty lines flourished en route to a 9-5 drubbing of the Chiefs in Lakefield, scor- ing six power- 2 play goalsanda = ppoJack shorthanded tally wong the DOME. way. In one respect, Sundays result was no different as only one goal occurred while both teams were at' full strength. Dan Wardlaw notched the first goal of the game for Merchants with the sides evened up. From there, the ModJacks fired three powerplay goals and Little Britain countered with two while enjoying the extra man advantage. Keith Leslie and Pigeau were the other Port Perry marksmen. Wardlaw, Chad Desjardin and Tim Teel replied for the Merchants, who outshot Port Perry 34-30, including the five-minute overtime session. Barkwell gave the Modacks a temporary 2-1 lead at 6:24 of the second frame and figured in the 1 ice, according to Carnegie. "He played a very good game for wus," he said. "He was a little nervous at the start, I think, but he came on strong and made some real quality saves for us." = WALLY WORLD - A couple of lighter moments in the game involved refer- ee Dwayne Phillips. On a penalty delay against the Mod acks, there wasn't a whistle when a Port Perry player assumed con- trol of the puck. The reason? Phillips s battled to a 3-3 tie with Little Britain Sunday night at "I played high school hockey for fun - and it was fun. But here, I can still have fun and be competitive at the same time." Game officials have kept a tight hold on the reins, calling numerous infractions most likely out of the NHL playbook. The myriad of penal- ties has kept the coaches on their toes and some players accumulating splinters to their. . . "It's tough getting any continuity when players are constantly spend- ing time in the penalty box," observes Port Perry skipper Chic Carnegie. "When we don't get too many penalties, we get a lot of good scoring chances like we did in the first period. After that, we had to juggle lines. That means some guys whistle was broken. An alert linesman blew the play down. In a takedown that would have done Hulk Hogan or Razor Ramone proud, Phillips outmuscled ModJacks' Trevor Bremner to the ice during a couple of altercations taking place at the same time... Todd Dennis scored three goals for Port Perry against Lakefield with singles from Mike Pigeau, Scott Heasman, Chad Kearns, Keith Leslie (four assists), Duane Empringham and a short- handed goal by Chris Foster. . . ModJacks have a week off, but get their first taste of action against an eastern Ontario team Sunday night when they entertain the Campbellford Rebels, starting at 7 o'clock. It's the beginning of a busy schedule as the ModJacks play five games in eight nights.
