"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 17, 1995 - 39 LE ITE R S from our readers Child care workers worried over cuts To the Editor: (An open letter to Pre- mier Mike Harris and Minister David Tsubou- chi) We believe that the wel- fare of our children is a public trust that requires the support and participa- tion of families, childcare providers, children's sup- port services, the broader community and govern- ment. Therefore, we re- quest the opportunity to talk with you as together we look toward building bridges to the future as partners in this venture. Our only "special inter- est" is the present and fu- ture welfare of our chil- dren. We have been led to believe that this is also the mandate of the Conserva- tion government. Working together with you, we hope to find crea- tive ways to respond to the challenging needs of chil- dren and families. By act- Ing as responsible citi- zens, we believe that we can maintain the values that support a high quali- ty of life for all children of Durham Region and this province. With the above in mind, we respectfully request your presence at "Building Bridges II," an informa- tion sharing session with the constituents of Dur- ham Region who are con- cerned about quality childcare and the future of our children. It will occur Thursday, Oct. 19 from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. at Durham Board of Education Administrative Building, 400 Taunton Road East, Whitby, Main Boardroom. Respectfully submitted on behalfof The Durham Region Child Care Forum, Families and Children of Durham Region Paper slammed From Page 6 tion, Not Russian Roulette with a rubber. The "Steps for Condom Use," on page 12 of the draft, is a particularly unpalatable, asinine, and perverted game of instruc- tions. If students of the "mature senior classes" have decided to become sexually active, then undoubtedly, they will be mature enough and adept enough to unzip their pants and "unroll condom on penis," insert same, and do all that follows without the help or guidance of the teacher, or schoolboard. Page 15 displays a table that deals with prejudice and discrimination. It has nothing to do with "Reduc- ing the Risk;" instead, it is subtly contrived to elicit discussion on homosexuality. "Reduce the Risk" is not about learning; it is an insult to the dignity and morality of the students, and tends to invade their privacy. It does not address morality or responsibility issues. By accident or design, the document is structured to tell the kids what to think, not how to think: to adopt group values, agree with group consensus; in other words, succumb to peer pressure, and follow the flock. It is the kind of document that SIECCAN might draw up. If it is necessary to teach STD prevention at school, then let's teach it in a way that will do some good and convey factual informa- tion. An excellent four hour video series, entitled "The Cause of AIDS: Fact and Speculation" was pre- sented on Rogers Community Channel in 1994. Produced by Colman Jones, it reveals much of the flawed research and explores the cause of AIDS and its link to other STDs. The video is likely available for classroom use, and much good information could be passed on to students without one single silly condom-cards game. And if homosexuality must be brought into the discussion, then by all means tell it as it is: Tell the kids the varied "sex- ual" activities homosex- uals engage in and sup- posedly enjoy -- let the kids decide whether nromosexual behavior rep- ~2sents a normal, natural, and healthy lifestyle, wor- thy of dignity and respect.
