2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 24, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Centre planned for 'isolated' Cartwright kids Directors to hold community hous meeting next Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Organizers are hosting a meeting to gather input from the community as they prepare to open a drop-in centre for the youth of Cartwright. The meeting will be held next Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the cafeteria at Cartwright High School as directors of the Cartwright Youth Coalition prepare to open the centre at the school Nov. 20. The centre 1s the brainchild of Blackstock resident Fred an action since making a run for the Ward 4 seat of Scugog council last fall. He has pro- moted the centre as a means of generating positive energy among kids who too often find themselves hanging out with nothing to do. Kids are 'isolated' "Part of the problem with (living in) rural areas is that it isolates kids," he said last week. "Not all kids have access to transportation, or a driver's licence. "They end up forming into groups that are kind of sponta- for them to do, they're going to find some- thing to do." That some- thing, Mr. Ford said, 1s not always positive, and winds up FORD impacting the community. With that in mind, he and his directors have seized upon the idea of establishing the drop- in centre to be open three nights a week between 7 and 10 p.m. Ford, who has called for such neous things. If there's nothing "What we're trying to do 1s give them something to do," said Mr. Ford. [t's hoped the centre and its activities will be youth-driven, so directors are trying to attract youth to next Wednesday's meeting to eventually serve as junior board members. Gaining 'tacit approval' Some of the kids in the com- munity have been approached, but 1t appears they're holding back to see what form the pro- gram takes. "We're getting tacit approval from the kids. But kids being" kids, they want to see it first," said Mr. Ford. "they want to see it up and running." Already offers of help have come from the township library board, which has agreed to help start a paperback library, and the local Lions club has donated $1,100. Wednesday's meeting will be for the purpose of gathering community input before the Coalition begins operations later on next month. The meeting gets under way at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria portable. For more information, call Mr. Ford at 986-0352. Studio 2 will air in November TVO hunts Scugog ghosts TVOntario"s Studio 2 was in Port Perry last week searching for the sto- ry behind the Murray House ghosts. Studio 2, which is in its second season, offers a mix of documentaries, de- bates, personal inter- views, arts features, panel discussions and live phone-in shows. The show began its season in early September. Host Mary Hynes spent last Thursday afternoon discussing the topic "Why are so many of us facinat- ed by ghost stories?" with a panel of guests at the lo- cal restaurant. The Murray House has been the topic of many tel- evision shows including the Dini Petty Show and W5 and was the focus of a Japense documentary. Both the owner of the Murray House, Niki Bain- bridge, and former owners of the home report strange occurences in the restau- rant, stating frankly there are three ghosts that live there. Table 13 in the restau- rant has become known as the ghost table, after a for- mer dishwasher reported seeing a ghost waiting on twoothers. The Port Perry segment 1s slated to hit the air on November 2.
