It was to be sent to Quebec this week, before the Oct. 30 referendum on sovereignty. Signatures gathered on petition Students send message to Quebec: Don't Leave By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Students at Port Perry High School have a simple, but strong message for their peers in Quebec: Don't Go. Last week, kids at PPHS were lining up to sign petitions that will be sent early this week to Quebec. Their signa- tures appear beneath a brief statement which expresses their "sincere hope" that Quebecers vote against sovereignty in the upcoming Oct. 30 referendum. The effort was begun by the Ontario Secondary School Students Association, and taken up locally by the student council at PPHS. Last week, OAC stu- dents Erika Goreski and Amy Sinclair were staffing a booth gathering signa- tures when they received support from an unexpected and high-profile individ- ual -- Reform Party leader Preston Manning. Mr. Manning, at the school to address a student assembly, strode up to the table and signed the petition as he entered the school gymnasium. He was one of many people to sign that day. Ms Goreski said that while the ques- tion of Quebec sovereignty isn't an ongo- ing hot topic at the school, students feel strongly enough on the matter to take part in the signature campaign. "We're trying to show students in Quebec that we still want them around," she said. "I think it's important to people that feel they're being excluded." Copies of the petition -- it reads "We, the undersigned, extend our hands in friendship with a sincere hope for your continued presence in Canada" -- were to be gathered by the Secondary Students Association and sent to schools in Quebec this week.
