By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Fields of Dreams -slo pitch tournament got some financial help from Scugog Council last week. Council agreed to give the tournament directors a $3,000 "forgiveable loan", which they need only pay back if the tour- namentisasuccess. Although the 1995 tour- nament did not make a profit, the directors, Frank Fielding, Richard Green and Terry Coyne are already looking at cost cutting measures to en- sure a profit next year. Their proposal for 1996 would see a profit of $14,400, based on an en- try of 70 teams. This would see several items cut out of the weekend agenda, but ones that would not be noticeable or make the tournament less enjoyable. Hospitals protest funding To demonstrate the seri- ous funding inequities fac- ing hospitals in the GTA area, the seventeen hospi- tals in the high growth area around Metro made a presentation to all the area MPPs last week. The four regions are the fastest population growth areas in the province and are home to over half the population of Greater Me- tro Toronto. But the aver- age per capita hospital al- location for Durham, Halton, Peel and York is $317, compared to $687 for the province. Jean Achmatowicz, a Board Trustee represent- ing the Hospital Council of Durham Region, ex- plained that these hospi- tals are performing at benchmark levels in terms of efficiencies but the funding inequities are se- riously impacting the de- livery of care provided to the people of these com- munities. Any profits from the tournament will be put to- wards ball diamond im- provements in Scugog Township. The directors say the tournament has a great reputation as a well orga- nized slo pitch tourna- ment and is recognized across the province through Slo Pitch Onta- rio. One hurdle the direc- tors faced this year was havingseveral teams drop out at the last moment. With the July 1 holiday falling on the weekend, many companies opted to observe the holiday on Fri- day, while others chose Monday. Mr. Fielding said the tournament lost about 30 teams in the last week because of conflicting holi- day schedules. Next year the holiday will be ob- served on a weekday and the directors see no con- flicts. councillors gave O'Toole a list of items Ro wanted checked into. At the top of the list was a long-awaited Highway 7A traffic study. Council was told the report would be complete by the end of the summer, but has yet to receive a report. In a letter to council last week Mr. O'Toole stated the MOT will have the study complete by the end of November. The new completion date is due to a misconception by the pro- ject manager, who made the statement that the study would be ready by the end of September when she took over the job as project manager. She was later informed by a senior personal that the completion date was im- possible due to incomplete data, Mr. O'Toole wrote. Regional Councillor Marilyn Pearce said coun- cil cannot be pleased with this reponse, saying they are passing off the compel- tion date because of a change 1n project co- ordinators. She said both the town- ship and the parents com- mittee at R.H. Cornish have already waited too long for the study and have requested Mr. O'Toole call the MOT again.
