Legionnaires Continue Winning The Legionnaires hosted Port Hope Friday evening and came away with an easy 7-2 victory. After three minutes of play Dean Van Camp led off the scoring assisted by Dane Gray and Tim Jones, putting Port Perry in the lead by one. With Port Hope putting on the pressure, Chris Monsma made a great save, allowing Port Perry to continue with their lead. Moments later after a scramble at the Port Hope net, Dean Van Camp tucked another one away (as- sisted by Dane Gray and Scott Brownson). Then at the 6:03 mark of the first period Scott Brownson scored an unassisted goal, allowing Port to end the first period with a 3-0 lead. Early in the second period Matt MacMaster again put Port Perry on the scoreboard (assisted by Mark Blakely and Scott Brownson). It was only minutes later when everyone thought Port Hope had scored, but the crowd drew a sigh of relief to see that the puck was on the back of the net. Port continued the hard forechecking allowing the Legionnaires Steven Wygerde to notch the fifth goal of the game assisted by Scott Brownson and David Justynski. Early in the third period Port Hope got on the scoreboard with a man advantage. Five minutes lat- er they scored another man advantage goal. Port Legionnaires came on strong late in the third to score two more goals. Ending the game with a 7-2 score. Good defensive plays by Tim, Grant and David and steady goaltending by Chris and Carl. On Saturday night the boys travelled to Oshawa to play the Bruins. It proved to be a fast paced game with end to end play. With no scoring until the 40 second mark of the first period when Tim Jones scored on a power play goal on a shot from the point, assisted by Matt MacMaster), giving Port a 1-0 lead to start the second period. Play continued to be end to end with no scoring in the second. - Midway through the third Oshawa got on the scoreboard with a man advantage tying the game at one all. Then Sunday afternoon the team travelled to Lindsay. The boys came charging out of the starting blocks, drawing first blood at 9:31 when Matt MacMaster was able to collect a rebound and bury the puck be- tween the pipes, David Justynski notching the as- sist. Just five minutes later Port's hard work and fore- checking paid oft as Dane Gray scored, assists going to Grant Hooker and Dean Van Camp. Starting between the pipes and coming up with the big saves was Carl Evans. The fast pace of end to end play made for an excit- ing game. With 33 seconds left in the first period, Lindsay scored but Port answered that, 20 seconds later when Steven Wygerde notched his first goal of the game, assists going to Grant Hooker and Chris Skerratt. The first period ended 3-1 Port. Early in the second Dean Van Camp added to the cause making it 4-1. Lindsay stormed back scoring with five minutes left in the period. The period end- ed 4-2. The third period showcased both teams netting a pair of beauty goals each. Lindsay came out hard af- ter the flood, notching two right off the bat. Leaving both teams at four goals a piece. But Port continued to play hard and made their efforts pay off. First on a goal from Scott Brownson assisted by Mark Blake- ly and David Justynski. Only to be followed mo- ments later on a goal from Steven Wygerde assisted by Scott Brownson. The game ended with a 6-4 victo- ry for Port. Nancy and Ed Teno would like to thank the par- ents for the beautiful flowers received during her re- cent stay in hospital and Nancy is looking forward to being back in the stand soon, to cheer the team on. It was great to see Dean Van Camp back in the lineup again after a speedy recovery from his sur- gery. ~ ModJacks pick up seven points in five games By Wally Donaldson with what [I've seen," beamed Keith Leslie, the overager bridge and Lakefield. peated the process with just Bobcaygeon has finally dis- covered a way to put some pop into their Bullets for the first time in their brief tenure within the Central Ontario Junior C Hockey League confines. But they still haven't been able to pull the trigger on the Port Perry ModJacks. With each team playing three games 1n as many nights, the Modacks outgunned the Bullets 8-5 last Sunday night, giving them an impressive seven of 10 points during a busy portion of their schedule over a 10 day pe- riod. Modacks ran their record to 5- 2-2 on the heels of a 10-5 thump- ing admimistered to the lowly Chiefs in Lakefield last Tues- day, a 5-4 win I'riday in Lake- field, a 2-1 setback in Lattle Brit- ain Saturday, capped by the decision over Bullets on home 1ce. 'I'm more than encouraged Port Perry skipper Chic Carne- : A "yy . gie on Sunday. "The rookies are scoring, the checkers are check- ing and we're getting a lot of goals." Which 1s fortunate, Rick Hutchinson and Paul Roberts have been sharing the netmind- ing duties - the latter nailing down his first win in Lakefield. Ironically, Hutchinson sports a modest goals - against average better than five. A concern in most cases. However, the spint- ed puckstopper has been aided by a plethora of goals at the oth- er end of the ice and has yet to record a loss with four wins and ate. "It's kind of odd that at the start of the year, I said we'd be in a lot of 2-1 and 3-2 games." cays Carnegie with a laugh. 71 thought defence would be a strongpoint. But I'll take the wins, no matter how we get them." with a keen smell for finding the gap around an opposing net, leads the ModJacks with 11 goals on the year. Interestingly, seven of those have been on the power- play, including two of his tallies last Sunday. Linemate Steve Barkwell also scored twice with singles from Chris Foster, Du- ane Empringham and Ryan Ridgway. "This 1s my last year, so | want to come out of this with something," says Leslie, ac- knowledging Port Perry's bid for a league title falling shy in the final during the previous three seasons. "IT think we're the most solid team around." ModJacks were hard pressed by a vastly improved Bullets contingent heightened by a new coach. Jason Stahlbaum, and an overall abundance of talent from goaltending out. Bobcay- seon has scored wins over Ux: "They are a nice team to play against," confirms Carnegie. "They play like Campbellford (of the eastern Ontario league). It's not goon hockey, more up and down. A pleasure to watch." Bullets twice had a lead on the ModJacks during the earlier stages and relied heavily on the netminding wizardry of Willy VandenOtellaar, a lanky sort who capitalized on his versatili- ty from post to post. However, he was also guilty on a few soft shots and was replaced by Jus- tin Rowden following Port Perry's sixth goal midway through the third. Derek Ellery notched two goals for the Bullets. Paul Flint, Tim Pearson Duane Falls added one apiece before Stahlbaum went in search of further goals by yanking his goalie with 7:50 still showing on the clock. THe re- over three minutes remaining and was burned on Barkwell's empty-net marker with 1:17 left Lo play. WALLY WORLD - Leslie and Empringham had two goals each in Lakefield with singles from Todd Dennis, Barkwell, Todd Stirling, Mike Pigeau, Foster and Brian McArthur. Leslie, Kenton Lefort, Empring- ham, Matt Pyke and Pigeau scored in Bobcaygeon. Barkwell was the only Port Perry scorer in Little Britain. LeFort came out of the game with pulled stomach muscles on Sunday. Pyke was not dressed due to a personal commitment.ModJacks are in Georgina Friday night but will find themselves short on the bench due to a school commencement. They entertain the Uxbridge Bruins on Sunday at Scugog Arena, starting at 7 p.m. ----------
