22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 31, 1995 -- "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SProrTs Broomball action With seven weeks of play passed already, the league standings at this juncture of the season are very tight. Brooklin holds a slim lead over the Swam- pers .in the race for first place and third through fifth are separated by two points. In game one, this past Sunday the Blackstock Brewers pulled off a minor upset as they downed the Homelife Swampers by a 4-2 margin. The Brewers held a 2-1 lead at the end . of the first period on geals by Tom Wotten, unassist- ed, and Al Boumeester with the help from Ron Wagg. The lone reply for the Swampers came from the broom of Brian Robin- son from Mike Healey. From the opening faceoff of the second frame, Black- stock marched down and it was Neil Woodrow from John Surette and Peter Wagg again making it a two goal lead. Midway through the period Robin- son added his second of the game with Brian Pomeroy drawing the assist. With 2:02 to play Blackstock picked up their second powerplay goal of the game off the broom of Ron Short from Wotten. The Brooklin Bruins managed to sneak past the Swampers in the league standings with a 4-1 win over The Framer's Gal- lery. Rob Mason set up Luc Collard to get the ball rolling in the first period for the Bruins. In the dy- ing seconds of that period Wayne Tate, on a solo ef- fort put Brooklin up by two. There was no further scoring until with just over four minutes to play Murray Down, and Shawn Mitchell assisted on Roger Rouselle"s tally. The Framer's answered this one with one of their own just a minute later as Scott McLeod tallied from Jim Weir and Glen Archi- bald. With 25 seconds showing on the clock, Mitchell got one of his own to round out the scoring. The final game of the day was a real squeaker with Trader Sams down- ing the Stouffville Scorpi- ons to the tune of 2-1. It looked like the Scorpions had in fact tied the game up in the dying moments only to have the officials ruleitdid not goin. Scoring for Trader's it was Mike O'Meara from Ken St. Amant and Les Al- len on the first shift of the game just 38 seconds into play. Allen drew his sec- ond assist of the game on the final Trader's goal by Craig Leask. Before the first frame had ended the Scorpions had replied with their single marker off the broom of Dan Van- Loon with Leo Pettipas drawing the assist. Atom As win 4-0 The Malmont Atom I team had another shut-outon Thursday at the Civic Auditorium in Oshawa. Spencer sent the puck over to Geoff who shotitin ending the scoring at 4-0. Superb goaltending by Mark Lott and Scott Honey who robbed the Canadians from appearing on the / Novice House League Re/max defeats Vancamp 7-3 One word best described the play of the Re/Max Novice House League team last Saturday and that was determination. Van Camps actually led almost for two periods but then the Re/Max team took control by scoring five straight goals to cruise to the win. Kirk Stevens led Re/Max with a three goal hat trick with all goals coming unassisted. David Stewart opened the scoring at 1:50 of the first period skating in on a breakaway to score on a low shot to the corner. Brad Layzell tied the game for Van Camp as he stole the puck from the blueline and scored on a low shot. Jon Taylor got a well-earned goal as he fought off the Re/Max defender from centre ice to give Van Camp's the lead. Both teams traded goals as Brooks Taylor scored for Van Camps and Norman Rooney's shot from in front of the net trickled past the Van Camp goalie. This set the stage for Re/Max to gain control. Trevor Agar tied the game at 5:38 of the second period from a rebound in front. Kirk Stevens first goal proved to be the winner as his shot from behind the net made it over the goal line. Norman Rooney's second goal made the score 5- 3 for Re/Max. Stevens got his second goal at 11:30 of the second and completed his hat trick with the lone goal in the third. Playing strong games for Van Camp's were Darren Black and Cameron O'Connor on defense while Robert Waller put in an excellent effort on forward. Tim Gibson played an excellent game in goal for Re/Max while Brent Meeking skated miles to help their team to victory. Port Perry Printing edges Haugens 7-5 Haugen's and Port Perry Printing played a close game on Saturday at Scugog Arena. Port Perry Printing opened the scoring at 9:27 of the first period with an unassisted goal by Peter Dutka. Haugen's first goal came at 8:52 of the first period also an unassisted goal by Jehu Michaud. Haugen's second goal came at 7:32 scored by David Dekoning. Final goal of the first period was scored by Todd Lance assisted by Jake Pilkey of Port Perry Printing at 6:06. Haugen's opened second period with a goal by Corey Hellingman assisted by Owen Penstone 23 seconds into the second period. The only other goal scored by Jeff Durward came at 12:42. Haugen's came out strong in the third period with a goal by Trevor Doe assisted by Owen Penstone. Port Perry Printing's Todd Lance scored a hat trick in the third period to bring his scoring total for the game to four goals. Jake Pilkey of Port Perry Printing also scored the game's winning goal at 9:44 assisted by Adam Farnley and Todd Lance. Haugen's Corey Hellingman scored at 5:14 with a solo effort. Haugen's goaltender Chris Boomhour played a outstanding game as well as James Donaldson, Scott Stone and Trevor Doe. Port Perry Printing's Robert Smith played goal at last minute for Mike Aguanno to help keep Haugen's at bay. Pee Wee House League Goreski's Resort The Goreski Peewees travelled to Madoc for their first tournament of the season. In the first game, Port was up against a strong skating Belleville team and lost the game by a 7-2 score. Port Perry goals were scored by Matt McGarry assisted by Billy Carr, and Matt McGarry's second goal assisted by Scott Duncan and Darren Royle. : In the second game of the day, Deseronto was the competition for the red and white. Port took control of the game early and coasted to an easy 5-2 win. lan Garnett fired two goals with assists going to Mike LeFort, Matt Skerratt and Mike Wadsworth. The other Port Perry goalscorers were Matt McGarry, assisted by Billy Carr and Darren Royle, Mike Wadsworth from Joel Thompson and John Burnett, and Billy Carr scored the final goal with assists going to Darren Royle and Matt McGarry. With this win Port moved on to the "B" championship final game and their opposition was the team from Marmora. Port fell behind carly in the game, but Matt Cracknell tied the score with assists going to Ian Garnett and Tyler Houthuys. Marmora scored again to take the lead in the first period, but once again Matt Cracknell scored his second goal of the game on a nifty pass from Mike Wadsworth to tie the game at two. The second period was scoreless with good saves at both ends of the rink. In the third period Marmora scored early and took a 3-2 lead. Port never gave up and Joel Thompson scored from Adam Moynes and Scott Duncan to tie the game and send it into overtime. After five minutes of sudden death, the score was still tied. Five players from each team would now decide the game with a shoot-out. The first two players from cach team would now decide the game with a shootout.The first two players from each team were blanked by outstanding goaltending.. The next two shooters scored and the shootout was tied at 2-2. With one chance for each team left, the pressure was on. Unfortunately Port lost on the final shot and Marmora won a very exciting hockey game. Congratulations boys for a game well played. On Sunday evening the Goreski Peewces travelled to Ops for a league game. The game started out fast and by the end of the first period Port led by a score of 2-1. Goals were scored by Matt McGarry from Bill Carr and Scott Duncan. Matt McGarry scored his second of the period assisted by Darren Royle and Mike Wadsworth. At the end of the second, Ops turned the score around and +. ff now had a 6-5 lead. Port goals were scored by - Matt Cracknell from Joel Thompson and Tyler Houthuys; Darren Royle assisted by Matt McGarry and Billy Carr. The final Port goal of the period was scored by Billy Carr from Matt McGarry. In the final period Ops skated away with two more goals and a 8-6 victory. The lone Port Perry goal of the third period was scored by Matt Cracknell unassisted. Atom House League Scugog's Gray keeps Laurentian at bay Opening goal by Laurentian at 10:18 with a lead pass from Tyler Martin at centre ice to Tim Oueclette who slipped the puck through the five hole. The equalizer came at 4:59 by Matt Kamminga assisted by Travis Black and Kevin Gloster. Good shift by Matt. Defensive plays by Chris McKitterick thwarted Laurentian's attacks. The go ahead goal by Chris McKitterick assisted by Michael McIntyre came at 3:31. Good plays by Scugog's Gabriel Benshop and Gary Renstone and Laurentians' Jon Breen and Steve Guthrie. . In the opening minutes Scugog's Brady Gray kept Laurentian's Matt Fish and Brad Giannini off the scoreboard but at the 12:08 mark Tyler Martin's solo effort tied it up. Trevor Chandler made a nice pass to Chris McKitterick whose rising shot found the mark giving Scugog the go ahead. Good individual effort by Teddy Howarth. At 5:08 a scramble in front of Laurentian's net minder Tyler Webb couldn't hold back Chris McKitterick who was able to punch it through assisted by David McGarry. Laurentian would not give up having a very offensive period but Scugog's Brady Gray kept them off the board until the 4:50 mark when Mark Vernest managed to put one away assisted by Paul Phillips and Tim Ouclette. Paul and Tim had good solo efforts. Laurentian pressed by pulling Tyler Webb during the last minute but Gray kept them at bay.
