It was by Thomas Moore and was called Oft in the stilly night. It refers to friends who have passed on and here is a couple of lines. "I've seen around me fall, Like leaves in wintry weather." This week we said good- bye to Gordon Gettins Sr. I met Gord many years agoin the early days of the Caesarea Fire . Brigade when I used to chase the fire truck on weekends. When we would get to- gether we would rehash some of the big fires we had. He was a former councillor and I re- call the many late night hours we spent in council chambers when we had Mr. Daniels, McGregor, Glithrow as top speakers of our rate payers group. I'm sure Don Frew, Law- rence Malcolm, Vernon Asselstine will remember those nights. Gord paid special tribute to me re the article I wrote on the silent servant here in this paper. We extend our sincere condolences to wife Shir- ley and children Patti, Ca- thy, Lori, Gord, and his eight grandchildren. We attended the Hallo- ween Dance at our hall Saturday night and Ohhhh what ea time we had. The stage end of the hall was well decorated with the walls in black with pumpkins, witches and spider webbing pinned to it. The rest of the walls and ceiling were superbly blessed with Halloween traits. Half way down the hall was an open coffin with poor old Uncle Henry in it. They say he died about 1878. About 11 p.m. due to table shortage they removed Henry and placed the food for our evening snack in the coffin. The food tasted darned good. At this point they started handing out the draw prizes 17 in all with a value well over $260. The costumes were hilarious with one old tim- er with a cane walking so slow and occasionally fall- ing, then suddenly he threw his cane in the cor- ner and was the star of the dance floor. It was Rob Whitehead who won for the male best costume. Susan Johnston won the female costume prize as the mini mouse. I took sev- eral pictures of the hall and when developed if they turn out I'll pin them up in the store for a couple of weeks. Thanks girls for ajob well done. Don't forget the Cart- wright High would like their donation to the scholarship fund for this year in by this Wednesday if possible. Saying of the week on Faith - We do not need more intellectual power, we need more spiritual power. We do not need more of the things that are seernt, we need more of the things that are unseen. Calvin Coolidge Joke of the week - A wife saying goodbye to her hus- band at the door asked, "I guess you don't know what day this is?" "I sure do" said the husband. As the day passed she re- ceived first a dozen long stem roses, then a box of her favorite chocolates, then a new dress from her favorie clothing store. She couldn't wait for her hus- band to arrive home to tell him what a wonderful Groundhog Day she had. Seniors entertained by local youth choir By Norm Caswell A large group of seniors gathered for our meeting and pot luck dinner, Oct. 25. The greeters for this meeting were Anne Glid- don and Norm Caswell and Doris Redman han- dled the registration. All present joined in the sing- ing of our National An- them and the Grace before meals, accompanied by Eva Hunter at the piano. A special welcome was ac- corded to our guests and new members. A fine dinner was served up by our kitchen staff and enjoyed by all. Our thanks to all those seniors who help to make these affairs special. The shuffleboard sched- ule produced winners with Clara Warren in first place followed by Grant Bright and Helen Thomp- son. Prizes were awarded and presented by Otto Bujtus. We would appreciate re- ceiving the proceeds from the bazaar draw ticket sales at our next meeting in November. Christmas dinner tickets will be available at our next meet- ing. Early purchase is rec- ommended so we can in- form our caterer as to the number that will be at- tending. Four members of the Uxbridge Youth Choir un- der the leadership of Don- na van Veghel entertained the seniors with their singing and harmonizing. This quartet, Joel van Veghel, Alida Wesselo, Luke Yourkevich and Whitney Barris were very impressive and we thank them for sharing their time and talent with us. The entertainment ended with a humorous tale nar- rated by Jim Martin. Seniors activities are listed in the calendar of both local papers and new members are always wel- come.
