------ 20- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 7, 1995 So "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" The Port Perry Midget "B" Islanders have had a very busy week having played three games this past week and coming away with a record of one win,one loss and atie. Their first game of the week was on Halloween Night in Sunderland and after having a very spirit- ed game against them the previous week the Island- ers were all set for some tough trick or treating on this night. The Islanders always seem to be able to score the first goal in their games and this night was no different as Adam Hunter gave his team a quick 1-0 lead with Adam Smith and Matt Blowe as- sisting on the play. The boys continued to keep up the pressure and it paid off for Ashley Van Shelven as he bulged the twine with the help on his goal com- ing from Ryan Puckrin and Scott Heffern. With a 2-0 lead the Islanders started to lay back a bit and Sunderland cashed in ~ to make it now a 2-1 game. The goal woke the boys back up again and it was Ryan Puckrin notching his first of the game with Ashley Van Shelven and Scott Heffern assisting on the play to restore the Is- landers two goal lead at 3- 1. The second period had goals with Scott Heffern scoring for the Islanders from Ashley Van Shelven. With a 4-2 lead going into the third period the Is- landers were looking to preserve the win and while protecting their lead they even picked up a couple of more goals, the first being a hard shot from the point off the stick of Dave "Boomer" Kam- minga going unassisted and the final goal been fired in from Aaron Levy with Matt Phillips and Mike Morden being the set up men for this one. Final score for the Halloween thriller was Islanders 6 - Sunderland 2. Brian Bick- more was in net for this encounter and although he wasn't tested often he came up big when called upon. The Islanders second game of the week was at home on Wednesday, Nov. 1 against Mariposa. The Mariposa team came out flying and caught the Is- landers flat footed and opened up a quick 1-0 lead in the first minute of play. Mariposa continued to put pressure on the Islanders but their lanky goaltender Doug Short held them in the game to keep it close. The second period had the Islanders start to mount a comeback as Adam Smith tied the game up at one apiece Islanders win, lose, tie with Todd Parry and Matt Blowe assisting on the play. Next it would be the Islanders who would take the lead as Ryan Puckrin put one in from Ashley Van Shelven and Chris Drury. The see-saw battle continued as Mariposa once again tied things up at two apiece. Then the Is- landers picked up two mi- nor penalties and Maripo- sa cashed in with two goals on the ensuing man advantage to take a com- manding 4-2 lead by the end of the second period. Mariposa continued to pressure the Islanders in the third but were turned aside by Short and the Is- landers pressed to get back in the game. Finally they did close the gap as Adam Smith from Todd Parry made it a 4-3 game in Mariposas' fa- vor. Try as they may the Islanders just couldn't get the equalizer and the win went to Mariposa. The Islanders third game of the week was in Bobcaygeon on Sunday, Nov. 5 and when Bobcay- geon made a last minute change on the games start time the Islanders were short a few players who couldn't make the game. The first period had both teams getting numerous scoring chances but it would be Bobcaygeon that would hold a 1-Olead. JEFF MITCHELUPORT PERRY STAR THE JUNIOR SOCCER TEAM at Epsom Public School has tinished an amazing season. They recently went to the Durham finals tournament, where they faced off against a number of teams from much larger schools, and wound up with a 4-1 record, losing 2-0 to Grandview in the final. Along the way, they allowed no goals until the final game. They posed recently with coach Rob Scott. The Islanders tied things up in the second pe- riod as Mike Morden turned on the jets and out- hustled a Bobcaygeon player down the left wing and around the net where he was hacked off the puck but Aaron Levy picked it up, pulled it out front and fired a shot at the Bobcay- geon net, got his own re- bound and fired it home to tie the game up at one apiece. In the dying min- utes of the second period it. would be Bobcaygeon that would once again retake the lead, making it a 2-1 game. Brian Bickmore contin- ued to play big in the Is- lander net as he closed the door on Bobcaygeon giving his team a chance to get back into the game. And get back they did as it was Mike Morden muscling his way out of the corner and firing in a backhander to tie things up at 2-2. Pick- ing up the assists on the play were Todd Parry and Adam Hunter. The Island- ers had some more scoring chances but just couldn't get the go ahead goal and this match ended in a tie. Also having strong games for the Islanders were the defence pairings of Noah Dorland, Adam Hunter and Chris Drury and Tre- vor Smith. The Islanders next home game is on Wednes- day, Nov. 8 against a rough team from Omemee with a 9:15 p.m. start time. This has all the mak- ings to be a great game so don't miss it. Come on out and cheer the boys on. Tyke action On Friday, Nov. 3, Dollar Plus Bargain Centre edged David's Hair Styling 5-2. Kyle Paige led the attack with four goals, Jared Olsen got the other. For David's, goals were scored by Alexandra Moffatt and Brent Hen- ry. Daryl Finn did a great job defending the net for Dollar Plus and David's Hair Stylings' Michael Wallace gave a valliant effort in keep- ing the puck from going between the posts. Kyle Jones, Mark McCready and Britni Smith played a strong game for David's Hair Styling. Dollar Plus had great play making from Eric Brown and Ryan Toms with some pretty fancy stick han- dling from Travis McAl- lister. JEFF MITCHELL/PORT PERRY STAR CROSS-COUNTRY COMPETITORS: The season is over for cross-country team members at Epsom Public School, where the team enjoyed success at several meets. Leading the way were Pam Armstrong, who was eighth at the regional finals, and Jordan Beelby, who tinished tenth. They posed for a photo at the school recently. Legionnaires win The Port Perry Peewee Legionnaires kept their un- defeated season going Friday night at home with a 6- 2win against Uxbridge. The game started off quickly with Port grabbing a 2-0 lead after only 20 seconds had been played and a few shifts later it was 3-0 Port. Matt MacMaster started off the scoring with Braden Tarbotton draw- ing the assist. Dean Van Camp then scored his first of three, this one unassisted. Uxbridge was back on their heels by this point and Port took full advantage of it. Mark Blakley slipped one home from Braden and Dane Gray, then Dean got his second from Braden and Matt, and that was all the scoring until the third period. Uxbridge scored early in the third and Dean replied from Matt and Scotty Bronson to complete his hat trick. Scotty finished off the scoring with an unassist- ed marker. Thursday night the boys were on the road to take on Trenton who had given them a good game a week ago. Manager Ralph McCullough and the coaches Garry Geer and Ed Teno had already had their fill of excite- ment before they got to Trenton. A good sized deer fig- ured he could take on Ralph's van and didn't make out too well. The van was still driveable though and Ralph managed to limp to Trenton and back. As for the game, our boys had their hands full as expected and Trenton held a 2-1 lead early in the third. Steve Wygerde had scored from Chris Skerratt and Scott in the second period. The Legionnaires started a comeback with 10 min- utes to go when Braden scored from Mark and then Dean scored from Braden and Matt. With four min- utes to go in the game Port opened it up a little and popped in three more to make the final 6-2. Sean Jef- frey scored from Scotty and Dave Justynski, then Scotty slipped one in with Matt getting the assist. Steve wrapped up the scoring from Braden and Grant Hooker. Goaltenders Chris Monsma and Carl Evans bailed out our guys in both games whenever they got a little sloppy in their own end, and rookie defenceman Tim Jones is adapting quite well to the physical aspect of the game after taking a couple of hard hits in Friday Night's game. Next test for the Legionnaires is Friday night in Co- bourg, a team they haven't played yet this year. SEE MORE SPORTS REPORTS PLEASE RECYCLE LB UCRYEELCLE ETE, THIS NEWSPAPER
