[* TCT 'uv hol Hr, LO 22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 7, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SrorTs By Wally Donaldson Special to the Star Away from the rigors of com- petitive hockey play the last two seasons, Allan Hurlburt decid- ed to give it another go at the crack of this campaign. Following a soft beverage stop with the Junior A Bowmanville Eagles and more recently the Junior C Uxbridge Bruins, the 20-year-old Oshawa native landed in Port Perry. In his second game with the Modacks, all Hurlburt did was score two goals and set up a pair of others while dismantling the struggling Bruins 7-0 last Sun- day night at Scugog Arena. It was a picturesque setting on this night from goaltending out. Netminder Rick Hutchin- son asked general manager Murray Parliament for a copy of the game sheet - and for good - reason. Hutchinson turned in a flaw- less performance between the pipes, accomplishing his goal by remaining focussed throughout the lengthy contest which was riddled with penalty minutes. Not even Hurlburt escaped the wrath of referee Derek Amell by visiting the box on two occasions. But when in full flight as a replacement on the wing with Keith Leslie and Steve Barkwell, Hurlburt took full control. Indeed, his passing game was every bit a delight to watch as his goals. "I went out with the Eagles hoping to play there at the start, but after a while, they thought it would be better for me if I went out with Uxbridge," said Hurl- burt, emphasizing the affilia- tion that exists between the two clubs. "I went out, but I didn't like it. I didn't know anyone there and I knew it would take time." Enter ModJacks' Kevin Vivian. "He told me that the ModJacks needed some offence up front and so I came out." Hutchinson was held point- less last Friday evening in Sut- ton when the ModJacks dropped a 4-2 decision to Georgina Ice. But he made up for lost time against the Bruins, who have Just one win in their last six out- ings. Leslie was a pillar of strength down the middle, accumulating five points, including two goals. Matt Pyke, Scott Heasman and Mike Pigeau were the other marksmen. "I was proud of the way the kids handled themselves out there," boasted Port Perry skip- per Chic Carnegie. "They took a lot of bull (from the Bruins). We controlled ourselves, fore- checked hard and backchecked hard." How ironic that even in the face of recording a big goose egg, the Bruins actually scored the first goal of the game before it was disallowed. Someone in the Uxbridge or- ganization will pay a hefty price for marking Brian Loage on the game sheet sporting the No. 15 Jersey when he was wearing No. 28. ModJdacks shut out Bruins 7-0 Sure enough, Loage executed a letter perfect pass onto the stick of Paul Tentadue while playing shorthanded, no less. The low shot beat Hutchinson between the pads. "He (referee) was going to al- low the goal, claiming it was just an oversight and I said, 'No way!' They had two looks at the game sheet before the game and could have made the change at that time. Amell Agreed." Following a scoreless opening period and the disallowed goal, Hurlburt - who played on a colle- giate level in Oshawa with the Donevan Blue Devils previously - converted a superb pass by Matt Pyke past a disenchanted Uxbridge goalie Bony Craw- ford. Modacks carried a 3-0 lead into the third period where the silly stuffbegan. The earlier concentration on hockey shifted to the world of pugilism, especially when the Bruins fell further behind. Mo- Jacks' Paul Kelly and Chris Fos- ter duked it out with Doug Par- kin and Ryan Latimer. Two of the better battles on the night, although an unscheduled meet- ing between Port Perry's Ryan Ridgway and Bruins' Dale Ed- wards earlier in the tilt de- serves full marks. "I expected a dirty game with Uxbridge," commented Carne- gie. "We got sucked in when we played them the first time. We learned." Beaverton came back and evened the score with some sharp- shooting of their own. Lat- er, Michael Lycett won the draw passing to Matthew Roth, who let go that much anticipated hard shot and put Port Perry ahead again. Then Nelson Lang- maid moved the puck ahead to Cassidy Weber who set up Tyson Savage to complete the hat-trick.
