Several members of the Guiding program in Cartwright were honored as recipients of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards for youth at a special ceremony, held at Queen's Park in Toronto. Local youths recognized at Duke of Edinburgh awards Several of Scugog's young people have been named winners of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award for youth. The winners attended an awards cer- emony Saturday (Nov. 4) at Queen's Park, where they received recognition for their contributions to the community, and attaining excellence in the pursuit of their personal goals. The program, endorsed by England's Prince Philip, is designed to encourage personal development and community involvement among young people aged 14 to 25. Here's a list of the local winners: 0 Lianne Campbell of Blackstock is a member of Scouts Canada, the Federation of Anglers and Hunters, and an international correspondence pro- gram. 0 Heather Goulding is student council president at Cartwright High School, a member of the Blackstock fair Board, and is involved with the 4-H Club. She has completed 12 years with the girl Guides, and volunteers with the Durham Horseback Riding for the Disabled pro- gram. ao Katherine Mairs, of Nestelton, is active with both the Girl Guides and her church, where she is a Sunday school teacher and choir member. She is aiming to attend university to study agribusi- ness and music. 0 Heidi Obstfeld lives in Blackstock, where she is a Brownie leader and Sunday school teacher. She is also a fig- ure skater and swimmer. a Julie Brooks of Sunderland assists at an area nursing home and is a Sunday school teacher who enjoys sports and camping. She plans to attend university to study education or leisure and recre- ation. The award winners were presented with certificates and a lapel pin by Lieutenant-Governor Henry Jackman at Saturday's ceremony.
