"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 7, 1995 -5 Local kids benefit from sport equipment drop-off There's still time for you to donate your old sports equipment for use by local kids, and win some cool prizes from The Beer Store. A drop-off bin has been at the Port Beer Store on Queen St. since late last month, and will remain there until this Friday when a draw for prizes will be held. | The promotion is The Beer Store's way of high- lighting recycling efforts, and fits in well with Waste Reduction Week, Nov. 6 to 12. Used sports equipment is collected at Beer Store locations, and then donated to various boys' and girls' clubs, as well as camps for kids with special needs. Each person who makes a donation can fill out a ballot making them eligible for a number of prizes, including the grand prize of a sports vacation for two to Jamaica. Locally, draws will be held for NFL foot- balls, and Waste Reduction Week mugs. Durham East MPP John O'Toole will be at the Port store around lunchtime next Friday to help with the local draw. In addition, half a cent from every bottle returned at the store will be donated to an environ- mental project or organi- zation in the area. s1 DOWN PER NMIONTH No Interest (until Apr/96. Used sports equipment collected until this Friday will be donated to local kids, and participants Special status opposed From Page 1 "I think Canada has built a system of law where we recognize individual rights within the system. Mr. O'Toole said Friday he's in agreement with a pre-referendum resolution passed at Queen s Park which recognizes Quebec as a "distinct culture. but avoids the distinct society phrase. "That's got to send a signal" on where Ontario s Tory majority would stand if asked to endorse a declaration of distinct society status for Quebec, he said. "He also feels that such a move to heal the rift between separatists and the rest of Canada would result in unfair footing for Quebec's French-speak- ing majority. ) "There are many distinct cultures in Canada, said Mr. O'Toole. "To embellish one over another In the mosaic of Canada would not, I don't think, serve any purpose." He added that the provincial government won't be drawn into protracted constitutional talks at this time; that's because the Tories want to continue with their fiscal reform here at home. Mr. Shepherd also said the feds can't afford to be distracted from the program of deficit cutting that began with their election three years ago.
