The committee, whose mission statement is to advise Scugog Township Council on items of inter- est in the 15-24 age group, held its first meeting No- vember 9 to begin prelimi- nary discussions. Several applied for the seven-person committee, which is made up of one representative from each ward as well as a member of the Parks and Recrea- tion Department and a parent advisor. The committee is made up of Ward 2 Councillor and Parks and Recreation representative Ken Car- ruthers, Cheryl Romeril, parent community rep, Matt Somerville, repre- senting Ward 1, Jeff Whit- field, Ward 2, Jeff Brown, Ward 3, Jepnifer Balser, Ward 4 and Rebecca Cohn, Ward 5. Although the first meet- ing was mostly used as an informal meeting to allow the members to familiar- ize themselves to one an- other, several ideas were brought up. The committee dis- cussed the possibility of holding a Christmas dance, but have decided it would be more beneficial to organize the group first and any activities and events later. The group is now looking at a possibly Valentine's Day event. The committee will be using Scugog Community Centre as a focal point for many activities, but other facilities in the township will also be utilized. One idea that will be de- cided on at the next meet- ing will be how to seek more imput from other youth in the community. Committee members suggested either a public hearing or a drop-in night at the Scugog Centre Com- munity Hall, where youth could make their prob- lems and suggestions known to the committee members. The idea for such acoun- cil was first brought to council's attention in the 1987 Recreational Needs Study performed on the township. It recommend- ed a youth council as a high priority to the devel- opment and support for a comprehensive recreation program for the town- ship's youth.
