As the dis- tance between primary producers and consumers grows, it is vital that sound animal care is both practised and promoted. The code 1s voluntary and is intend- ed not only for producers, but also for industry per- sonnel, scientists, educa- tors and animal welfare groups. It is the industry's way of policing itself. Have you read through the booklet recently and en- sured that all of your fami- ly and staff have done like- wise? If not, take the time to do so. The code offers common sense guidelines to producers, handlers and processors in the are- as of housing, nutrition, health, stockmanship, handling, transport and many other topics. The code should be required reading for anyone who works in the swine indus- try. How does your opera- tion measure up to the standards set out in the code? If you are not sure, maybe it is time to find out. For a copy of the code, call your local OMAFRA office, your Swine Advisor or the Ontario Farm Ani- mal Council at (905) 821- 3880. This year's campaign aims to raise $4.5 million rovince-wide, more than 100,000 of it in Durham, for programs to combat asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, and other forms of lung disease. The 1995 Seal, which depicts a teddy bear on snowshoes making his way through snow covered evergreens on a sunny day, was designed by Ma- ria-Aline Oliver of Otta- wa. Ninety-one years ago, in 1904, Christmas Seals first appeared on letters and parcels as a way to raise money to fight tuber- culosis (TB) and this cam- paign theme continues, providing the largest source of funds for fighting lung disease. One in five Canadians has some sort of breathing problem. Every 20 min- utes each day another Ca- nadian dies from some form of respiratory dis- ease. And every month in Ontario, 1,100 people die from smoking-related causes. Lung disease 1s Canada's third largest killer. Donations to this cam- paign are used to support educational programs for adults and children right here in our community who are suffering from lung disease. The proceeds are also used to fund much needed medical research in Ontario medical cen- tres. Christmas Seals work year round to give life and breath to millions of Cana- dians so look in your mail this week for The Lung As- sociation envelope of Seals, use them on your mail and put a donation in the mail to The Lung Asso- ciation. You can call The Lung Association's Durham of- fice at (905) 436-1046 for further information on lung disease and pro- grams or to make a dona- tion. Last meeting of 4-H Club is held Nov. 2 By Sarah Stapley The sixth and final meeting of the Blackstock Fruity 4-Hers was held on Nov. 2 at the Blackstock United Church. For this meeting the members were supposed to bring along a friend be- cause it was a party. Heather Malcolm opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and leading the 4-H pledge. : After each group pre- sented the jingle they had prepared at the last meet- ing, everyone was split up in groups according to the fruit or vegetable on their name tag. Each group played a game of charades and other fun activities with a fruit/vegetable theme. While the leaders put the food out, everyone did a wordsearch. Then, the best part - eating! Mrs. Johns reminded all that the achievement night would be Nov. 29. AS SEEN AT THE SNOWMOBILE SHOW! iE LI. PLASTICS INC.
