"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 14, 1995 -21 Sr ORTS This is week number two for the Pineridge Mid- gets, sponsored by Pine- ridge Sports Centre, locat- ed just off Highway 7A, in the Port Perry Plaza. On November 6, the Pineridge Midgets played host to the Petes from Pe- terborough. The arena was packed, with an astounding attendance of 526 loyal fans. We got down two goals after one, as we had difficulty mov- ing the puck out of our own end. Carlos Phoenix got us on the board, loading his cannon, and letting one fly-top shelf, where they keep the peanut but- ta. Assisting Red, were #99 Jay Strickert, and Dougie's cousin, Jason Lo- gan. What great passes these two fellows made. Beautiful. The Petes scored three unanswered goals, until 14:17 of the third period, when Jeffrey Clarke used his new Swedish stick to knock in a rebound from a Darryl McEnaney shot. Kev Gray also assisted Jeffrey. We played a great third period, and if we only took it to them the entire game, those 1 darn Petes wouldn't have known what hit 'em. The next day, we drove down to Cobourg, Ontario, Legionnaires in Cobourg On Friday, Nov. 10, Port Perry's Legion Peewee's travelled to Cobourg. Matt MacMaster opened up the scoring completing a three way pass from Dean Van Camp and Scott Brownson. End to end action ensued, with some superb goaltending displayed by Carl Evans, highlighted by Carl blanking Cobourg on a penalty shot. Dean put Port Perry ahead 2-0 unas- sisted. Our defence played very well with a couple of hard hits by David Justynski. Time and time again Carl came up with skillful saves, but Cobourg man- aged to score three; the winner occured in the dying seconds, giving them the win at 3-2. A good, solid ef- fort by all, but a tough way to end their 13 game win- ning streak. After a rigorous practice on Saturday morning, the Legionaires moved on to Port Hope on Sunday, Nov. 12. Port Perry controlled the game from start to finish registering a 7-0 win. Chris Monsma was continually sharp, earning the shutout. Offensively, Braden Tar- botten led the way with three goals, Matt MacMaster scored two goals, Dane Gray and Dean Van Camp had one goal apiece. Scott-Brownson, Mark Blakely and Dean had two assists each; Dane Gray, Chris Skerratt and Sean Jeffrey helped with one assist each. The defensive core of Grant Hooker, Tim Jones, Sean Jeffrey and David Justynski patrolled the blue- line with authority, and Steve Wygerde hustled as al- ways, dishing out some tough hits. Good luck in the tournament at St. Thomas on the weekend, boys. The barn is still standing strong after a century of wear and tear from hockey players coming from all over the globe. Cobourg got on the board first, ear- ly. Jeff Clarke replied with a slapper, whizzing past the netminder's ear, and into the top corner. Bang! T.C. assisted Jeff, after Lairdy moved the puck up the boards. Rob Murphy gave us the go ahead goal on the power play, beating the goalie, short side. McEnaney and Clarke picked up helpers. The Bourg scored two second period goals to give them a three to two lead going into the third. We weren't finished yet. Kevin G-Ray took a slapper on net. C'est le but! Jeff Clarke assist- ed, after Lairdy moved the puck up the boards. Mur- phy took charge, scoring his second marker of the contest, assisted by Carlos and Mac. Clarke scored two more, before the final buzzer blew, to complete the hat trick. The game was then delayed ten min- utes, while they cleared the hats off the playing surface. Way to go Clarke, now we all have to buy some new hats at Pine- ridge Sports Centre, locat- ed just off of Highway 7A, in the Port Perry Plaza. Assisting Clarke on his scoring rampage were Murphy, McEnaney, Kev Gray and Brad B. S. Shan- ley. This was our first win of the regular season, and it sure was a beauty! Good effort, boys. We then played our ri- vals, Peterborough again, on Nov. 12. Daryl and Rob- bie Murphy assisted. Pe- terborough replied twice, although no one knows how, as John Babcock played an outstanding, tremendous, gigantic game. That a go Johnny! You da man! McEnaney scored for us to tie it up, again a power play goal. Assists to Murphy and Clarke. What a great pow- er play unit we have. It didn't look too good in the third as the Petes had us by one - three to two. - Clarke came through again. Another power play goal. With seconds ticking down, he bashed in a re- bound from a Kevin Fran- cis Gray shot. Kevin who just came off a stint with the Port Perry Juveniles, was in fine form on this night. We ended with a hard fought tie - three all. This week's player pro- file is on team captain, nu- mero neuf, Jeff Clarke. Clarkey is a versatile player, who can play wing or back on the point. Clarke likes Clarke's always talking it up, and talking strategy on the ice. He likes to play keep away in his spare time. Jeff stands 6'3", 175 pounds. I wouldn't mess with this kid. One day Jef- frey will be on the cover of' SI, guaranteed. (Swimsuit edition, no doubt!) If you need to know anything else, just ask Clarkey, or his teammates.
