BSS Lass SANE SEEN rn a 8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 14, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice " Lishmans trying to build responsible development To the Editor: Recently I received an open letter to the Nestleton Community regarding the Lishman proposed develop- ment to the west of Nestleton. After reading the open letter my fajth in their motives is in no way shaken. [ understand the wish of the Nestleton inhabitants to main- tain a rural style of living. It must, however, be understood increasing need for a higher tax base to maintain our com- munity services, some develop- ment is required to help the local economy grow. Apparently the Lishmans intend to produce an industnal center that is intended to not only employ many members of our community, but to be as environmentally friendly as can be achieved. We often protest large companies in an seems that the proposed devel - opment adequately addresses both these concerns. [ believe that instead of keeping our heads in the sand and pretending that our com- munity can survive and prosper by maintaining the current status quo, we should applaud and encourage a development that could be seen as the van- guard in the development of industry. We could easily developed by large conglomer- ates with enough money to buy oft our concerns. [| believe that we have an opportunity to make a state- ment as to the type of develop- ment and the criteria by which future industrial proposals will be judged. I feel that our council should endorse this proposal and allow the appro- priate rezoning for this devel- opment. We can always make environmentally friendly tech- niques. | Let's put our community on the map as a town of which we can all be proud of. I am sure that it would be much easier and cheaper for the Lishmans to locate to another area and build an industry in a conven- tional, non-environmentally- friendly manner.
