"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" a aie cl PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 21, 1995 - 21 SrorTs MoJacks tie with Lakefield Chiefs By Wally Donaldson Special to the Star There are occasions when a new wrinkle here or there can make a difference on a hockey club - the emphasis placed squarely on enhancing its posi- tion, of course. Take the Port Perry MoJacks for example. The club's braintrust has shuffled a couple of players in opposite directions and for the most part, it has paid off in divi- dends. Steve Foster, who started the campaign on the blue line, has been transplanted to the for- ward lines. Meanwhile, Jeremy Geer, initially groomed as a de- fenceman but recently seeing duty up front, has returned to the backline. ~ Thereis a chemistry that sim- ply will never go away. The ab- sence of Matt Pyke's quarter- backing duties on the power play and Mike Pigeau's threat- ening maneuvers in front of an opposing net could be spotted a mile away last Sunday evening. The result was a hard fought 1-1 stalemate against a cellar- dwelling, but improved Lake- field Chiefs. In two previous en- counters, the MoJacks had pummelled the Chiefs net for a total of 19 goals. However, a culmination of Port Perry's missed opportuni- ties and a first-star goaltending effort by Lakefield's Colin Caley left the contest without a win- ner. "It was a night when the puck wouldn't go in the net," said Mo- Jacks' head skipper Chic Carne- gie, who two night's earlier pi- loted his team to a 4-3 overtime decision in Bobcaygeon against the Bullets. "Our passing game wasn't there. The puck was going into the feet rather than on the stick. It happens that way, sometimes. Just one of those games." Chiefs enjoyed a two-man power play advantage on two occasions in the opening period, but were either thwarted by an alert goalie Paul Roberts or guilty of failing to execute a con- sistent drive once over the Port Perry blue line. Only Gary Toms displayed the tenacity to reach the slot area. Toms did make good on his chance early in the second peri- od while circling from behind the MoJacks' net and stuffing the puck into the short side. But the MoJacks struck less than three minutes later. Scott Heasman unloaded a low screamer past Caley just sec- onds after Scott Heasman had won a key faceoff. ModJacks ran into penalty dif- ficulties periodically, especially in the early part of the third when Gavin Cochrane and Todd Dennis were sent off at the same time. It could very well have been costly. Toms, in the slot, ap- peared to kick the puck forward and take a shot in one motion. The official ruled no goal, claim- ing it had been kicked over the goal line. | Abreak, for certain. While the MoJacks battled for control throughout the evening, Carnegie and assistant Brett Puckrin kept up with constant chatter in their quest to main- tain a positive attitude. Puckrin placed his attention on Foster and Geer. "We found that (Foster) had been battling the puck and get- ting out of position on defence," sald Puckrin. "So, we moved him up and he's adjusting very well." Foster shared his talents, first on a line with Paul Kelly and Kenton LeFort, followed by Stirling and Al Hurlburt. Geer saw duty with LeFort and now-departed Darryl Bour- geois in camp and "we were im- pressed with this kid line," said Puckrin. "But I had also seen Jeremy play defence for four or five games and I was impressed. He sees the game really well." With Pyke (personal reasons) and Pigeau (work commitment) missing, the ModJacks lacked some polish, especially in Lake- field's side of the ice. Each team had a pair of shots in overtime, although the Mo- Jacks had the better chances to end it on a positive note. The most significant was at the buzzer when Stirling's center- ing pass just failed to find the mark with Foster charging to the goal. WALLY WORLD: Keith Les- lie fired three goals against the Bullets, including the overtime winner with 1:59 elapsed. Todd Dennis added the other marker with Steve Barkwell chipping in three assists...Carnegie and Puckrin were hoping to see more of newcomer Ryan Speake, formerly a high school player in Oshawa. He was eject- ed for checking from behind sev- en minutes into the game...Modacks also missed Ryan Ridgway, who is serving a suspension...It was Lakefield's third game in as many nights. ModJacks are heading into a busy portion of their schedule as they play in Sutton against Georgina Ice Friday, play in Warkworth Saturday against the East's Campbellford Rebels and next Tuesday in Uxbridge against the Bruins. They return to Scugog Arena on Thursday, Nov. 30 against Lakefield. Game time is 8:30 p.m. Pearce Novice reach C fin Pearce Auction Novice provided another week- end of exciting hockey. Fri- day, Nov. 17, Cobourg came to play in Port Perry. Matthew Roth led Pearce Auction with a four-point night. Matthew Roth was just getting warmed up. he let go a missile to make it 3-0. At our end the de- fense of Nelson Langmaid and Derek Goreski helped goalies Leo Taillon and Mark Carnaghan earn a well-deserved shut-out. With 1.1 seconds on the clock Matt the missile 'caught the inside of the post. Kory Bauer set him up. Nice grin Matt! Port Perry didn't give up as a hard working Kory Bauer slid it in. Keenan Geer and Taylor Churchill earned assists. The Huskies made it 5-1 but Tyson Savage came back with his second goal. Danny Halward got the assist. Haliburton went on to win this one but the Pearce Auction gang improved again. Danny Halward was voted the M.V.P. for this final tour- nament game.
