Dale Hoy is a biologist and long-time member of the Pickering Naturalists, and Friends of Second Marsh. As guest speaker she will take a look at local wetlands, of which Dur- ham Region has all four types, marsh, swamp, fen and bog. A minor component of her talk will be to touch on planning guidelines around wetlands. DEN's meetings are free and open to the public; al- though this meeting is taking place in Whitby, DEN's membership is drawn from the entire re- gion. Ms. Laing, director of the Durham Board for the past Seven years, returns long standing area of arent in the new posi- tion; prior to coming to Durham, she was the Su- perintendent of Curricu- lum Services for the Hal- ton Board of Education. Ms. Laing will be re- sponsible for assuring a challenging and relevant provincial curriculum and high standards for stu- dents from the early grades to secondary school graduation. She will en- sure classroom materials keep pace with the chang- ing needs of students and teachers by promoting the use of information tech- nology to facilitate the de- velopment and province- wide sharing of these re- sources.
