Jim Edmiston, accompanied by his wife Eleanor and daughter Susan, told councillors they don't feel safe in their community. "This is the first time I've ever had to say this," he said as he explained being threatened for his opposi- tion to a casino last year; experiencing death from traffic accidents along the Island Road, and most recently being stopped by police at a roadblock follow- ing a shooting. The latest incident, when a Fralick's Beach man was shot on Oct. 27 as he attempted to help someone who had allegedly run out of gas, prompted Mr. Edmiston to approach council and request improve- ments to the Island Road and to provide better police protection for area residents. "I don't know why we can't get better police protec- tion," he said, stating there is a lack of police visibility on Scugog Island. He said he felt that the Island was just too easy to ignore and there did not appear to be any regular patrols. Mr. Edmiston also questioned why there hasn't been any improvements to the Island Road, where three people have died in the past few years. He said he was frustrated with the township's stance that it is a regional road and was not their responsibility. Regional Councillor Marilyn Pearce informed the Edmistons that a meeting has been scheduled for Nov. 27 between township and regional staff and politi- cians to address the condition of the Island Road and invited Mr. Edmiston to take part.
