MoJacks win two, closing in on first By Wally Donaldson . Special to the Star Collectively uttered on the lips of Port Perry 'players and management was, "Funny, they seemed like okay guys the last time we met." The reason for their dis- enchantment? Two teams who special- ize in the technical aspects of the sport slipped off the tracks last weekend while ~- the ModJacks drew closer to the midway point of their Central Ontario Jun- ior C Hockey League sea- son. Just a day after pound- ing Georgina Ice 10-1 in Sutton, the ModJacks con- tinued their sparkling play with a hard-fought 3- 1 victory over the eastern Ontario front-running Rebels Saturday night in Campbellford. In both cases, the oppo- sition seemingly had the attitude of a snarly tiger - for different reasons, how- ever. In Sutton, the sudden departure of head coach Steve Sydor to the Junior A expansion Stouffville Clippers has left Georgina in an acute state of disar- ray, both on and off the ice. The usually slick Ice, who have in the past ex- emplified a tenacious brand of skating, experi- enced a myriad of break- downs from goaltending out, culminating in barely a thread of patience and leading to a steady flow to the penalty box. The opportune Mo- Jacks, taking advantage of these gifted situations, were good on five of their first six powerplay advan- Turnto Page 18 Midgets win tourney On Saturday, Nov. 25 the Port Perry Midget 1s, sponsored by Pineridge Sports Center, hosted the 67 annual Van and Truck World Midget Tourna- ment, at Scugog Memorial Auditorium. Applicants from all over the province applied to get their team into this pre- stigious tourney, but the list was cut down to eight teams; Port Perry, Stouft- ville, Cobourg, Uxbridge, Vaughn, Penetang, Trenton and Bracebridge. We first faced the green and yellow from Uxbridge. Do they have ugly unies, or what? The lone marker was scored on the power play, by Rob Mur- phy. Carl Phoenix made a nice pass to Murf, who one-timed it, into the net, high. Rob has soft, soft hands. This was the only goal we needed, as John Bab- cock was spectacular in the pipes, kick- ing all the rubber away, to earn the shutout. What a performance! The Bridge must have been frustrated with John. This was a good defensive game, and the fellows on the blue line all played well. This put us on the 'A' side of the tour- nament. We went and got some break- fast, and said hello to some kind of bear on Scugog Street, before the next game. We faced Stouffville. Mike Phoenix got the start, and played outstanding, mak- ing saves Jaques Plante couldn't even make. Both teams were playing hard, but no one could beat either tender. There were some great hits in this one. Clarkey knocked the opposition around as usual, with some bonecrushers. We went to overtime, with one player being removed each minute. There was still no score until it got down to two on two. Murphy and Strickert were out there playing their hearts out, when Rob picked up the puck in the opposition's corner, gave the Stouffville defenceman the old' how's she goin', faked the goalie, and sniped it, top corner. What a goal! We were flying! Rob then proceeded to do the soccer run, until he was mobbed by the rest of the team. We were one more step closer to reaching our goal: to win our tourna- ment. We had to beat Penetang in the championship game. Jason Logan got us started with a lovely goal in the first. He said "I just shot it as hard as I could, and the darn thing went in." Lovely! Jay Strickert and Carl Phoenix assisted Hulk Logan. Penetang came back with two markers early in the second, and had us 2-1. Logan scored again, this time on the power play. Kevin Hobbs passed it behind the net to Darryl McE- naney. Mac pushed it between two pairs of legs, under a stick and over a fallen player, out front to Logan, who banged it home. Picture perfect power play! Great passing. It was all tied up, when Kevin G-Ray scored off faceoff in Penetang's end. Unassisted. The goalie didn't have a chance. Kev's the great- est. It stayed 3-2 for us for the rest of the second and the entire third to give us the championship! We were going bana- nas. Babcock had another great game in goal and came up big time after time. Way to go John. Babber received MVP honors. Take a closer look in this week's player profile. John is a second year goalie, who has reflexes like you wouldn't believe. John says "Well, I try my hardest when I'm in net, and think that really helps me out." Babber never gives up, always giving that second, third and fourth effort. John's a friendly lad who will clean your windshield, change your oil, or fill up your gas tank with a smile. John's a team player who likes to win and loves to have fun out on the ice. That's what it's all about. Thanks to John Froats and Derek Tindall for coming up from the Bantam team to help patrol the ice. Great hus- tle, guys! Also thanks to Ritchie LeFort, the tournament convenor. The P.M.A. (Player's Mom's Association) is also thanked for running the food booth in the hall and making the best sandwich- es we've ever tasted. They were great! Thanks to everyone else who helped in any way. It is very appreciated. Pineridge tourney action Nov. 9 Pineridge Sports Atoms hosted LNHL Hawks in an exhibition game. The Port Perry team came up against a - strong goaltender and came away with a 7-4 loss. Scoring for Pineridge were Pierce Jones from Tony Boomsma and Jesse Muli- lins, Tyler Weisflock on a nice breakaway from a Stormy Wootton pass. Wesley Langmaid scored unassisted before Justin Shinn closed out the scor- ing with a hard wrist shot from just inside the blue line. This game saw the in- troduction of Chris McKit- terick. Nov. 10 the team trav- elled to Orono losing 6-1 and also Tyler Weisflock with a broken leg. Port's only goal came from Jesse Mullins. Nov. 12 Pineridge Sports travelled to Graf. ton for an exhibition game against Bowmanville. The Port Perry gang jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. Tyler Lee opened the scoring with a shot from the left faceoff circle. Wesley Langmaid made it 2-0 picking the lower corner from well out. Chris McKitterick picked up his first point with an assist.
