"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 28, 1995 -19 SPORTS Legionnaires a busy team On Nov. 24 the Oshawa Black Hawks were in town to face the Legionaires. After a bit of a slow start Chris Skerratt let a 35' slapshot go that found the corner as- sisted by Steve Wygerde just 36 second later Braden Tarbotton fed Dean Van Camp who walked out from the corner and stuffed one home. Then at 13:22 of the first period Mark Blakeley made an end to end rush passing to Dane Gray who was parked in front of the net and made no mistake stuffing this one home. The second period was scoreless. With Oshawa on a power play Chris Monsma made three saves on a scramble in front of the net. Scott Brownson had two nice scoring chances on set ups by Matt Mac- Master and Mark Blakeley only to be denied. The third period started with Oshawa on a power play and 57 seconds into the period Oshawa scored a power play goal. At 5:39 Port took two minor penalties but Carl Evans stood his ground making four big saves. At 8:22 Port put the game out of reach when Dean Van Camp sent a 20 footer along the ice with assists go- ing to Scott and Sean. Final score Port 4 - Oshawa 1. Port's strong defence of Sean, Tim, Grant and David helps keeping our goals against down. On Nov. 17 Port travelled to St. Thomas for their tournament. Our first opponent was a weaker Hamil- ton team as our squad scored a convincing 11-1 win. Our scorers were: Steve Wygerde - three goals, three assists; Braden Tarbotton - three goals, one assist; Scott Brownson - one goal, three assists; Chris Sker- ratt - four assists; Dean Van Camp - two goals, one as- sist; Mark Blakeley - two goals, one assist; Sean Jef- frey- two assists. Tim Jones, Matt MacMaster, Dave Justinsky had one assist each. Game two was against a strong host St. Thomas team. Port had numerous chances but could not put the puck past the hot goaltending. With Port down by two Scott Brownson scored with 1:55 left in the third period with assists going to Dave and Steve. Chris Monsma with a solid game in net was pulled in the last minute of play but Port could not get the tying goal and suf- fered a tough 2-1 loss. Game three was against Simcoe. Port was in a must win situation as Simcoe had beaten Hamilton 12-0. Earlier things seemed to be going Port's way as Dean opened the scoring early in the first period with an un- assisted goal. From then on it was a goaltenders battle with our man Carl Evan keeping us in the game. With 32 seconds on the clock Simcoe managed to get one to go just over the goal line. Needing a win Port pulled Carl in favor of the extra attacker. Luck was not on our side and it ended in a 1-1 tie. This eliminated Port as it was based on a point system. On Nov. 25 we headed to Cobourg for a game against Guelph. The first period was scoreless but Port held the edge out-shooting Guelph 10-3. In the second peri- od after Chris Monsma made a nice save, Chris Sker- ratt out-hustled Guelph's defenceman to get a breaka- way only to be denied a goal by Guelph's goalie. Thirty seconds into the third period Braden intercepted a pass in Guelph's end and beat a surprised Guelph goalie - then just 40 seconds later Chris makes a pad save and gives a big rebound right to the Guelph defenceman who immediately slapped it home. Both teams had scoring chances in the final minutes of play but the game ended in a 1-1 tie. M.V.P. was Scott Brownson. Game two was against Scarborough. Sean opened the scoring of the first period with a slapshot from the point. Tim Jones picked up the assist. At 4:25 Chris Skerratt stuffed in a loose puck from in front of the net. Assists went to Matt and Scott. Second period action had Steve Wygerde send the puck back to the point where Grant Hooker sent in a slapshot which Chris Skerratt banged in the rebound. Then 42 seconds later Matt comes out of the corner and makes it 4-0 for Port. Assists went to Dean and Dane. At 3:30 of the third period Chris passes to Matt who in turn goes behind the net. A quick pass out front and Braden bangs it home. The final goal of the game was scored by Scott with assists to Dean and Tim at 6:20. Final score 6-0 - Port M.V.P. Matt MacMaster. Game three was a must win situation as Oshawa Bruins had won their first two games. Port wasn't long getting on the scoreboard. At 1:49 of the first period Braden banged in his own rebound right after Dane had taken a shot on the short side. At 6:51 Chris put in a loose puck after Sean kept it in at the blueline. Bra- den also picked up an assist on that play. Oshawa scored at 8:21 after putting on some good pressure. Fifty-six seconds into the second Port takes a five minute major penalty and Oshawa scores to tie it. At this point Port buckled down and killed the remaining penalty off. Just after we got back to even strength, Dean breaks in, shots and puts his own rebound in. Then at 9:07 Matt sent Dean in on a breakaway. Dean made no mistake with a great deke to the right. Oshawa refused to quit and 55 seconds into the third, they made it 4-3. Oshawa ran into a bit of a pen- alty problem and Port's power play went to work. At 8:27 Mark scores with a nice slap shot. Pick up assists were Dave and Sean. At 9:08 Port got an insurance goal as Mark passed over to Matt who put it home. Fi- nal score 6-3. M.V.P. Dean Van Camp. Port finished first in their division so we headed to the semi-finals at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Our next oppo- nents were Prince Edward County who were the wild card team as this was a three division 12 team tourna- ment. In a fairly physical game it turned out to be the Matt and Dean show. Matt was in on all five goals as he had two goals and three assists. Dean had the other three goals for the hat trick. Also getting assists were Braden with two, Tim and Scott with one each. Final score 5-2. Port M.V.P. -Dean Van Camp. Port was now in the championship game against Al- liston. Port got on the board first as Dean let a slapshot go from just inside the blueline that found the top right corner. Alliston, who were outshooting us in the first period then tied the score. Chris had made a couple of saves but a loose puck was shovelled home. Just 46 seconds into the second period Dean knocks down an Alliston clearing pass and snapped one in from about the hash marks. Three minutes later Allis- ton ties the game at two when a shot hits Chris in the shoulder goes over him and in. Third period action had Alliston take its first lead of the game at the 5:01 mark. Then at 8:01 Grant passes to Scott who in turn flips the puck to Chris Skerratt and Chris finds himself on a breakaway. Chris on a nice deke sends this game into overtime. Overtime was a five minute period with one man taken off every minute. After five minutes and down to one man and a goalie neither team could score. A sec- ond overtime period was started with one man and a goalie. Shots in this period were about even with plen- ty of end to end action. Finally at 1:40 of the second overtime Alliston scored to win the game 4-3. As in all games there must be a winner; but this game had no loser. Boys, keep up good team effort and congratula- tions on a fine, fine weekend M.V.P. Chris Monsma. 'killing position.
