New priest soon at St. John's Blackstock Our community, like all others across Durham Re- gion and far beyond was sad- dened by the news of the passing of Gary Herrema of Uxbridge, Chairman of Re- gional Council, excellent farmer and friend of thou- sands. Many from here joined the huge crowds to pass our respects to this fine gentleman and express our sympathy to his wife Helen and their family. To say that Gary will be missed is one of the understatements of the century. Indeed the end of an era. Sorry to report the passing of Mrs. Grant Mahaffy after a courageous fight against cancer. Sympathy to Grant and their many friends and relatives. Funeral service was held on Monday. A capacity crowd attended the memorial service held at the Blackstock United in honor of Jeff Churchill on Saturday afternoon. The ser- vice was conducted by Rev. David Shearman. During the service reflections on Jeffs life were made by several dear to him including his mother Mrs. Jean Churchill. On Sunday evening the Christmas season began in earnest at the Ecunemical Carol Service at the United Church, a choir made up of members from all the churches of Cartwright was outstanding. The many an- thems were really excellent and were combined with the singing of many of the old fa- vorites. This was followed by a social time. Those who were unable to attend cer- tainly missed a great eve- ning. Last Sunday at St. John's Anglican Church Rev. Roy Shepherd was thanked for being the interim minister since spring. The people of St. Johns are looking for- ward to the arrival of their new priest. On Dec. 1 we will welcome Rev. Hugh Kerno- han as our new minister. His first service will be a Euchar- ist on Dec. 3 at 9:30 a.m. The official welcoming service or induction will be on Wednes- day, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. The Right Reverend Douglas Blackwell, Bishop of Trent Durham will be officiating and we are hoping for a large turnout both from the congre- gation and the community. For 30 years St. Johns has been served by the same priest as the Church of the Ascension in Port Perry. We are 'very excited by the change in status at St. Johns as we are to be a parish on our own. This is an important oc- casion both for St. Johns and for Blackstock. We are look- ing forward to celebrating with you on Dec. 6. A pre-Christmas family gathering was held last Sun- day at the home of Keith and Christina Wright in Oshawa. Guests at the Sunday eve- ning dinner were Walter and Audrey Wright, Lloyd and Thelma Wright of Blackstock and Hazel Wright of Oshawa. It was a "Wright" --- fine par- ty! There were nine tables at the weekly card party with the following winners: Edna Manns, Irene Hoffman, Alma Manns, Betty Hockley, Tere- sa Berkers, Ruby Cochrane and Stuart Dorrell. Lucky draws were won by Alma Manns, Nerta Masters, Jean Porrill, Gary Notenboom, Sa- rah Brunton and Bernice Ranton. Santa Claus is certainly in the area following his arrival 'at the annual Port Perry San- ta Claus Parade on Saturday. Next Sunday the annual Pancake Breakfast with San- ta will be held at the Rec. Centre from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is sponsored by the Blackstock Nursery School. On the weekend Gerald and Joyce Kelly hosted a pre- Christmas family gathering at their farm in Bobcaygeon.
