We're sure people will feel that as Lishman employees we have an ulterior motive in wanting to stay in Scugog, and to some extent they are right. We all have roots in this area, and of course we all enjoy shopping in Port Perry and surrounding towns. We also feel very lucky to have jobs in these unsettled times, and if Paula Lishman Limited has to build in another township, or even another country, many of us will move with the company. Of course as well as our tax dollars moving, so will our shopping dollars. Many of us are single parents depending on this income. Do we become another statistic of our troubled times if this facility moves to another area? We understand that there are many agencies that must be satisfied and permits that would have to be obtained before any building actually takes place. Although this could take some time, if council would approve the rezon- ing, subject to the satis- faction of the various agencies, the purchase of the property could be finalized. We're sure that if you put this project to a vote within the community, you would find that the vast majority of taxpayers are in for of keeping Paula Lishman Limited and Operation Migration within our borders. We, as a community, are proud to be a part of the plans and dreams of this unique couple. Employees of Paula Lishman Limited Kinsmen continuing dog sled races From Page 1 with this year's race, to which the Kinsmen hope once again to attract rac- ers from across Canada and some states in the U.S. Many of those mushers have been in con- tact with the local organiz- ers to state their willing- ness to take part in another event in Port Perry, he said. This year's races, planned to run over two days on the weekend of Jan. 20 and 21, will fea- ture a much smaller amount of prize money -- a $500 purse, compared to $10,000 -- and the Kins- men are hoping to gain support for a plan that would alter the course, taking it primarily over land as opposed to over the ice of Lake Scugog. The alternate course, which is to be presented to Scugog councillors for comment, would take the racers from their tradi- tional start and finish point on Queen St. along the west shore of the lake, and then inland again, toa groomed trail on the Can- terbury Common property at the north end of town. Mackey, Bailey & Korb Barristers & Solicitors By guaranteeing a good trail, the Kinsmen can as- sure success of the 1996 edition of the races, said Mr. Goldberg. "We have been informed by the mushers that if we have a good trail, they will be there," he said. A successful running of the event would help the races regain the stature they enjoyed in their first few years, and eventually lead to the corporate spon- sorship that's necessary to offer larger purses. This year's races will be backed by H&R Block, which will provide funding for promo- tion and guarantee the $500 purse. The Kinsmen are hop- ing to revive the dog races after last year's unfortu- nate cancellation because they're good for Port Perry, said Mr. Goldberg. In addition to mushers, a lot of spectators -- who spend their time and mon- ey here -- are attracted by the event, he said. "The Kinsmen aren't do- ing this to make money," said Mr. Goldberg. "There are easier ways than this to raise funds." That en- deavor also suffered last year, once again because of rotten weather. Mr. Goldberg said both enterprises are good for the community, and ought to be kept going. "I think the community overall needs it, and wants it," he said. "It's just a mat- ter of somebody taking the bull by the horns, and do- ingit."
