"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 5, 1995 - 15 S ORTS Compton Novice compete at Beaverton tournament Nov. 28 saw the Comp- ton Cable Team in Little Britain against Mariposa for our second match up of the season. Boy are we glad that one's over and in the history books. Dec. 1, we played against Manvers in Port Perry. Despite all the "dig- ging and poking", Man- vers got the two points for this game, taking us down 3-0. This past weekend, we spent two days in Beaver- ton at their Annual Novice Tournament. The first game matched us up against Ennismore at 9 a.m. There was plenty of end to end action, but no breaks, as Ennismore kept us on a tight leash. 'Ennismore managed three quick goals in the first and one more in the second. Port held them at that for the remainder of the second period and all of the third. Offensively, Brett Simmonds, Tyler Cunningham, Matt Char- ron kept the puck on the move with the help of de- fensive players Mike Red- man, Hayley Campbell and Kristy Ashton. Our next game was sev- en hours later at 5 p.m. against Gravenhurst. Gravenhurst came out strong and picked up three quick goals in the first, one in the second and if that wasn't enough, one more in the third. Jake Jones, Matt Menear and Adam Smart worked their butts off during this game. The final score was in favor of Gravenhurst (5-0). We headed home to regroup for Sunday's game. In a half-inch of freezing rain, we all made it back to Beaverton safely (a few close calls). Port Perry was ready to meet Oshawa in the semi-final. The team period was fast and furi- ous. The guys and gals were a "team". Strong skating, nice complete passes. We knew what was on the table. One goal and our coach was going to Modacks vault into top spot By Wally Donaldson Don't rock the jukebox. Keith Leslie and Todd Dennis, ably supported by winger Steve Barkwell, have been pounding out the hits...and goals...with regularity and their music has vaulted Port Perry ModJacks into first place in 'the Central Ontario Jun- ior C Hockey League. Leslie and Dennis are successful week. After tying Uxbridge Bruins 4-4 a week ago, Port Perry proceeded to shave Lakefield Chiefs 16- Turnto Page 16 wear the beaver head. At the end of the first pe- riod, no score. Maybe ... At the 9:19 mark of the sec- ond, Oshawa took the lead. At the 7:15 mark, Craig Simmonds slid one past the red line assisted by Dave Stewart. The Port Perry fans roared. Our coach put on the beaver head. We were on the board and ready to go. At the 6:36 mark of the sec- ond, Oshawa got the go ahead goal and at the 2:48 mark, the insurance marker.Offensively, Chris Charron and Blake Cun- ningham gave it their all, as did Craig Kehoe and Mitch Truax, but Oshawa got us 3-1. Our men be- tween the pipes, Sam Ben- nett and Kyle Geer, got quite a work out over the last few games. Good tr guys! Without a doubt, our "hero award" goes to Craig Simmonds for that lone goal. Our "best sport award" has to go to our coach - Dennis Ashton - for keeping his word and put- ting on that beaver head (sorry Dennis, this was Just a little too good to leave out of the paper). Legionnaires off to the NHL? On Tuesday, Nov. 28 Port Perry's Le- gion Peewee team played host to Lind- say. Showing the effects of playing six tough games on the weekend the boys had a slow first period, and fell behind 1-0 by the end of the second period. Carl Evans was sharp in goal to keep the score close. During the intermission before the third period, the coaching staff of Gary Geer, Ed Teno and Ralph McCullough must have fired the Blue and Gold team up as they came to play in the third. Dean Van Camp tied the game finish- ing off a breakaway pass from Matt MacMaster. Braden Tarbotton started the play in his own end and Carl Evans also received an assist. The game remained tied with numer- ous chances at both ends until late in the final frame. Matt MacMaster dug out the puck in our end, fed it to Dean who carried it in and fought off a check to centre the puck to Jason Whitworth who banged it home with six seconds left in the game. Needless to say, every- one was happy to have Jason back in the lineup after his surgery, and scor- ing the winning goal was just icing on the cake. Back in action on Friday, Dec. 1 against Lindsay again the two teams played another scoreless first period thanks to some outstanding goaltend- ing by Chris Monsma. These two evenly matched teams battled on with the in- ensity level high. Tim Jones played it tough, taking a couple of hard checks to hold the line in the offensive zone and Just managed to get a piece of their cap- tain to thwart a breakaway. David Jus- tynski and Grant Hooker also played well in our zone forcing Lindsay to shoot from bad angles. Shawn Jeffrey, as usual, made sure they kept their heads up dishing out bodychecks espe- cially the open ice hit that sent their for- ward into orbit, making him feel like a Toronto Leaf on his butt. Lindsay opened the scoring in the second but Port stormed right back. Dane Gray positioned in front of their net, tapped in a perfect feed from Mark Blakely and Jason Whitworth. Eight- een seconds later Lindsay went up 2-1, but this team that never quits when they are down once again showed off their fire power. Dean Van Camp walked around their defence with a feed from David Justynski to tie it up. At centre Scott Brownson, Jason Whit- worth and Braden Tarbotton gave us a puck control advantage winning most of the faceoffs, highlighted by Braden winning six in a row in their end during aman advantage. Matt MacMaster put us out in front to stay assisted by Braden and Dean. Braden put the game out of reach with one minute to play with help from Dean and Matt. Chris Monsma was cool and steady throughout the third turning away several good chances: Steven Wy- gerde continually crashed the net fore- checking and Chris Skerratt continued to make sharp headsup passes. Looking forward to some more great hockey games when these two teams meet again during the balance of the season. The Legionnaires are playing so well they will soon be compared to the best team in the NHL, this years Stanley Cup Champ favorites, the De- troit Red Wings. Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc.
