16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 5, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS Islanders busy The Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget "B" Islanders have had a very busy week this past week having played three league games and a tournament. The three league games had our local boys outscored to the tune of 23 to 12. You don't win many games giving up that many goals. Beating up on the Islanders were these losses were on the road and everyone of these road games became quite an event in itself as it was either a snowstormor ice storm that made the travel- ling bad and may have affected the Islanders play. Nah, it was just sporadic play that led to their demise. They did have their moments now and then as they would actually make some good passing plays and play as a team. When they play as a team they are a good team to watch perform but when they play as in- dividuals and throw out the team concept they don't play worth a hoot and the final scores prove it. The playmakers for these three games were Ashley Van Shelven, Ryan Puckrin and Matt Phillips with three assists each. Dave Kamminga with two assists and single assists to Mike Morden, Adam Smith, Tre- and Doug Short. The benefactors of this playmaking were goalscorers; Ashley Van Shelven with three goals, Matt Phillips, Mike Morden and Scott Heffern with two a piece and singles to Ryan Puckrin, Adam Smith and Todd Parry. The Islanders next encounter was an icy trip to Bancroft for three more games in a tournament. Once again we were outscored to the tune of 14 to 8 for the three games which does show a bit of an improvement Mariposa, Millbrook and Cannington. MoJacks have extended their impressive undefeat- ed string to 10 games, posting eight wins and a pair of ties. Everything looks rosy inside the dress- Ing room. Well, almost. Take Sunday's matchup as an example. Forever a scoring machine, the Mo- Jacks have also demon- strated an Achilles heel from a defensive perspec- tive. "We're still not clearing the puck out of our end the way I'd like to," says Mo- Jacks' head coach Chic Carnegie, "and it's not al- ways the defence's fault. The forwards aren't com- ing back to lend their sup- port. They're not picking up their man. We score a 'bunch of goals and de- fence goes out the win- dow." tion how potent their top two lines can be in a pinch. The passing and finishing touch around a net is truly a sight to behold. Experience plays a ma- jor role, especially when it concerns the Oshawa- raised tandem of Leslie and Dennis. A year ago, the pair finished third and fourth respectively behind Georgina's Jason Robin- son and Bowmanville's Curtis Hodgins. But they've turned up the vol- ume this time around and the results have been de- fined on the playing sur- face. "We didn't really have a winger for them all last year," says Carnegie, "and that's the way we started this year. But Steve (Bark- well) came to us and he's fitted right in. What makes it even better for us is the fact he is also capa- ble of scoring goals. That gives us one heck of a threesome." Leslie has achieved 28 from Duane Empringham and Keith Leslie...In Thursday's lambasting of the Chiefs, Dennis fired four goals with three each from Mike Pigeau and Leslie. Kenton LeFort chipped in two goals with the others from Todd Stir- ling, Scott Heasman, Paul Kelly and Al Hurl- burt...ModJacks' assistant skipper and one-time con- stant scoring threat Brett Puckrin notes Port Perry's periodic disregard for de- fence. "You see bits and pieces of lapses, but (Sun- day's) game was more sig- nificant. Jacks have accumulated 34 goals in their last four outings...MoJacks have scored big on home ice this season and Carnegie fig- ures he's discovered the right formula. "A bigger ice surface is definitely to our advantage," he says. "Some of our plays aren't there in other rinks be- cause of the smallerice."
