In fact, statistics for 26 Division in north Durham, of which Scugog is a part, 6 show all types of personal x and property crime are down in comparison to the first nine months of 1994, police said last week. It's the cyclical nature of crime which explains the recent spate of auto thefts, said Const. Dave Hender- ~ son of 26 Division station in Sunderland. "We've had a flurry in the last three or four weeks here," he acknowl- edged, noting that many of the vehicles stolen in Scu- gog and area have been trucks. Across Durham Re- gion there were 1,637 re- ported auto thefts in the first nine months of the year, up from 1,570 during the same period in 1994. "So if you look region- wide, that's about a 4 per cent increase," said Sgt. Ryrie. "It goes in cycles; generally, you've been lucky up there." One startling statistic is that a full 50 per cent of the vehicles stolen in the region are Chrysler prod- ucts. They seem to be known among car thieves as easy marks, said Const. Henderson: "The bad guys have found the secret." Other statistics re- leased last week show a general decline in crimes against persons and prop- erty, said Sgt. Ryrie: oBreak-and-enters here register at 235 residential burglaries, and 98 com- mercial, for a total of 333; that's down from last year's end-of-September total ot 349; a Police have 26 sexual assaults reported in the area at the end of Septem- ber 95, compared to 29 last year; Q Arzons are down from 10 at the end of September 1994 to four for the same period this year; Q The same holds true for robberies. By the end of September last year there had been 10, and just five are on the books so far this year; Q Other incidents, such as shoplifting, are also down in 26 Division this year, the statistics show.
