SPLENDID GIFTS! 18 Simcoe St. S., Downtown Oshawa 571-3100 SPORTS Midget Islanders split with Markham The Port Perry Canadi- an Tire Midget "B" Island- ers played a pair of games with Markham this past week and came away with a split in the home and home series. The first game was on Wednesday, Dec. 6 in Port but home ice was not an advantage as Markham came away with a 5-4 win. The Islanders had not een playing quite up to snuff lately but after a team meeting on Wednes- day they came out playing as a team and really looked good. They showed good hustle and playmak- ing throughout the game and could of picked up the win with a couple of breaks. Markham opened the scoring first early in the opening period but the Is- landers fought back to tie things up as Matt Phillips fired one home with Chris Drury and Ashley Van Shelven being the setup men on the play. The second period opened with Markham once again getting a quick _goal but just 31 seconds "later the Islanders would tie things up at two a piece your sweets t0 | | suit everyone at: ¢ NUTSABOUT CHOCOIATE hot 1 Led] PIAS SIE ef er egteg AAAS, 1, i as Todd Parry ted a pass to Aaron Levy who carried the puck into Markham's end then laid a perfect pass out to Ryan Puckrin who fired it home. The play was wide open and end to end but it was Markham that bulged the twine three more times to take a 5-2 lead at the mid- way point of the second pe- riod. It was at this point that Islander goalie Doug Short pulled himself out of the game as he was play- ing with an injured hand and couldn't hold on to his stick any longer. Brian Bickmore came on in relief and did a superb job to keep his team in the game and give them a chance for a comeback. They almost pulled off the comeback as Brad Eadie blasted one in from near center ice to make it a 5-3 game and then late in the third peri- od it would be Ashley Van Shelven from Matt Phil- lips to make it a 5-4 game but that was as close as they would get in thisone. The Islanders travelled to Markham on Saturday, Dec. 9 for the rematch and came away with a 2-1 vic- tory. This game wasn't a replay of the first game but rather more of a scrambley type game with not a lot of shots on net and a lot of turnovers in the neutral zone. After a scoreless first period it would be the Islanders that would break the ze- roes first as Dave "Boom- er" Kamminga blasted one in with help coming from Aaron Levy and Ryan Puckrin. Markham tied the game at one a piece late in the second period but that would be the only one to get by Islander goalie Brian Bickmore who wasn't tested often but was sharp when called upon. The eventual winner came in the third period as Aaron Levy lifted the puck over a sprawling Mark- ham goalie to notch what would be the winning goal. * Assisting on the play were Todd Parry and Ryan Puckrin. IGA Bantams close in Uxbridge IGA Bantams were on the road Saturday, Dec. 9 to Uxbridge for a 7 a.m. start. The spectators were very grateful for the heat- ers at Uxbridge being on and we settled in for a ~ good match of hockey. We got off to a 1-0 lead at 4:56 on a goal scored by Kam Cooper assisted by Jon Sanders and Pete McKit- terick. Uxbridge quickly answered with a goal at 2:55. It was tied 1-1. A sur- prise shot by Uxbridge at 2:47 caught us off guard and we were down 2-1. Chris Thompson made some great saves in this first period to keep the score tight. An. Uxbridge penalty at 8:24 of the sec- ond period resulted in a goal for us at 8:22. Jeremy Pare took a quick shot that Report from the lanes Thursday Night Mens Nov. 30 Standings: Dowsons 650, IGA 39, Philips Pontiac 33, Legion 32, Trim Rite Kitchens 32, Bryans Tow- ing 24. The Uxbridge player didn't even have time to sit down in the penalty box. Pete McKitterick got his second assist of the game on Jeremy's goal. Despite the great work of our guys on defence Uxbridge scored again at 1:53 of the second period. It was one of those goals you couldn't have saved; a weird angle, hit the post then in. Into the third period we went and although we tried we couldn't get a goal but we didn't let Uxbridge score either. Nice to see a well refereed game too. Way to go forwards, de- fence teams and Chris, our man between the pipes. We hung in and gave it a good effort and that's tough when you're miss- ing a couple of players.
