"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 12, 1995 -19 SPORTS MoJacks' streak ends at 12 against Uxbridge By Wally Donaldson Special to the Star "Port Perry MoJacks have discovered at least one reason why sorcerers and others with a pulse on black magic consider 13 a most unlucky number. Taking direct aim at a 13- game undefeated string last Sunday evening, the ModJacks ran out of lucky numbers while dropping a 5-4 decision to a diligent Uxbridge Bruins at Scugog Arena. ~ It was the first home-ice loss of the campaign for the Mod acks who, despite a 12- game string, still lost a grip on first place in the Central Ontario Junior C Hockey League. The Bruins, who have also fashioned an impressive win- ning percentage, rang up 35 points on the season, two better than Port Perry just past the midway point of the schedule. The loss, despite being con- sidered a setback to this point, didn't disturb ModJacks' skipper Chic Carnegie to any great extent. "Naturally, you like to keep that undefeated string going," he said with a huge grin, "but you'd have to be an awfully hot team to go without losses." "If anything, this might help us in the long run. Our team goals were slowly changing to individual goals and that does- n't help anyone." Put referee Duayne Phillips in a game between the MoJacks and Bruins and two things are assured: 1. Fans can expect a physical confrontation between two tal- ented teams and 2. a 60-minute contest can suddenly take on the length of a Jerry Lewis telethon. Questionable calls Phillips' questionable calls and lengthy delays between stoppages presented an uneven flow throughout the tilt, often leading to short tempers on the ice and in the stands. "With refereeing like that, the players don't know what they're suppose to do," adds Carnegie. "There were no obstruction calls meaning someone could run at the goalie. The players were get- ting more frustrated with the referee than they were the other team." Even the fans got in on the act with numerous catcalls at the officiating. Bruins' Brad Oliver ran ModJdacks' Keith Leslie hard into the boards during the second period. No penalty call. Defenceman Gavin Cochrane took aim at Brian Lodge later in the period and was ejected. Meanwhile, the Bruins took full advantage of their opportunities, capital- izing on questionable defensive work by Port Perry. Control the boards in basketball and you're a winner. Control the crease on the ice and you set the tempo. That's exactly what Uxbridge accomplished, espe- cially in front of MoJacks' goalie Rick Hutchinson who, though receiving little support outside the crease area, was guilty of committing himself far too early. That's what transpires when a netminder becomes confused about the little activity by teammates at his doorstep. Darryl Whitlock notched the lone goal for Uxbridge in the opening period, swooping the puck to the far side of the goal. Lodge increased the mar- gin early in the second before Mike Pigeau, converting an excellent feed from blueliner Matt Pyke, beat Uxbridge goalie Barry Crawford on the power play. Chris Foster tied the score a short time later, but the speedy Bruins regained their two-goal advantage on goals by Matt Muir and Paul Trentadue. Bruins take lead In the third, Todd Stirling connected with only 55 seconds elapsed. However, Loughery Graham fired the eventual game winner, lifting the puck by Hutchinson. Keith Leslie put ModJacks' one back of a tie, but they were unable to cash in for the equalizer despite yanking Hutchinson from his goal with 1:09 remaining. "We talked about it earlier on the bus that winning can be harder than losing," said Carnegie. "What I liked most of all was our guys were never arrogant." Carnegie was pleased with the efforts of several players during the impressive run, the most recent with speedy Trevor Bremner. "Trevor has played well, especially our last two games," says the Port Perry coach. "Actually, he played his best game last Friday in Bobcaygeon, the best since I've been here, even though he has a tendency to wander." WALLY WORLD - ModJacks bettered their record with a 7- 4 win over the Bullets Friday in Bobcaygeon. Scott Heasman had two goals for the victors with singles from Matt Pyke, Todd Dennis, Mike Pigeau, Steve Barkwell and Ryan Speake. ModJacks were without the services of Kevin Vivian and Chad Kearns due to injuries and Ryan Ridgway, who is serving a suspension. ModJacks are slated for a game Thursday night in Picton against eastern Ontario's Pirates. However, general man- ager Murray Parliament is doing what he can to postpone the game. Several players are involved in school exams. ModJacks play a home-and- home series with-Little Britain Merchants, starting Saturday night in Little Britain. The two teams are at Scugog Arena on Sunday, starting at 7 p.m. That Sunday game will be a "Family Christmas Night" with Santa on hand. Several draw prizes will be available. XL Eaglettes fans 'hometown proud' Two back to back home games this past weekend left Eaglettes fans feeling rather "hometown proud!" The first match-up on Saturday brought Ennis- more to Port Perry to face a disappointing defeat of 10-0. Try as they may En- nismore had a hard time getting possession of the ring. The Eaglettes decid- ed it was their ring and re- fused to give it up. As a re- sult this left Sarah Woods netminding for Port look- ing a little lonely by times, yet when called upon cer- tainly protected her net to secure the shutout. XI. Eaglettes goals scored by Ceilidh Baxter and Brooke Simpson, who each picked themselves up a hat trick, while Jessica Doe and Amanda Curry settled for two a piece. Jill Hunter and Catherine Copeland each played a sound game and deserve a pat on the back for all their effort! The second game of the weekend contest was a square off with Ajax 2, and if your morning coffee didn't do the trick this game would have certain- ly brought you to life. Both teams were of equal cali- bre and it was apparent it could have been anyones game. The force of the of- fense, the skill of the de- fence and the brilliance of the goaltending (Lyndsay Whyte for Port) was obvi- ous on both ends of the ice. At the end of the first peri- od the game was tied 1-1, but that score wasn't long multiplying into the sec- ond Port pulled ahead by two. Ajax grabbed a couple quick ones. Then Jessica Doe put alid on it with two lovely back to back goals to secure the win for Port Perry. Eaglettes first goal scored by Ceilidh Baxter, compliments of Caitlyn Hellingman. Caitlyn Hell- ingman also set up Port's second goal with a forceful shot from the corner straight out front for Jessi- ca to pop in. Port's third goal was scored by Ceilidh Baxter assisted by Jessi- - ca. Eaglettes fourth goal was attained by the com- bined efforts of Amanda Curry (assist) and Jessica Doe (goal). As mentioned before- hand Jessica secured the win with an unassisted goal, for a final score of 5- 3. The XL Eaglettes Nov- ice team continue to thrill their loyal fans and should feel very proud of them- selves. Keep on scoring Eaglettes! Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc.
