DIRECT TO YOU * WORRY FREE GUARANTEED INSTALLATIONS Writing test in Durham yields positive results The writing skills of Durham's Grade 12 stu- dents are improving, ac- cording to results of a ma- jor review released by a consortium of four public boards of education. In 1992, the Ministry of Education and Training administered a Grade 12 writing review in school boards across Ontario. In 1993, the Durham, North York, Lakehead and Hal- ton Boards of Education developed a testing con- sortium to conduct stu- dent assessment initia- tives, including a repeat of the Grade 12 writing re- view in 1995 so that changes in the students' writing skills could be monitored and compared to earlier results. Just under 6,000 stu- dents in the four boards enroled in basic general or advanced level Grade 12 English course last spring participated in the review. In the Durham Board of Education, 94 per cent of 1378 advanced level stu- dents and 92 per cent or 1018 general level stu- dents took part. Since only 125 students were enroled in basic programs, their results were not recorded for the four board report. Each student wrote an es- say which was marked by teachers using a Ministry of Education and Training six point scale. The six point scale tells educators if students are writing at the expected level as de- termined by an indepen- dent panel of university and college teachers, par- ents, business and labor representatives, teachers and trustees. Highlights of the results include: In the advanced level program 76 per cent of Grade 12 students in 1995 performed at or above lev} el 4, compared with 62 per centin 1992. In the general level pro- gram, just over 83 per cent of Grade 12 students in 1995 performed at or above level 3 compared with 74 percent in 1992. Again 1n1995, females in both the advanced and general level programs scored higher than males. Schools will release their individual results after this date. After mid Febru- ary, schools will release action plans which they will develop to address their individual school re- sults. The board also will release an action plan dealing with its overall re- sults. Results of the provincial Grade 9 reading and writ- ing test conducted earlier this year by the Ministry of Education and Training will be released Nov. 1 by the ministry. The Durham Board of Education will bring a report on these to the same Standing Com- mittee on Dec. 11.
