Editorial Comment Another sign of the times Community Memorial Hospital officials revealed late last week that for the first time, they will be forced to close up to 10 beds over the Christmas holidays. The move is being made in an effort to carve away at a deficit that has surpassed $50,000, and it's just the first step; another slow down is to be expected during the March break next spring. Sadly, such closures are the norm in hospitals across the province now. And they will continue to be as provincial funding is cut back, leaving hospital administration in a tough spot: What services should be curtailed, and how much Money will there be to continue to provide quality service to the people who have come to expect it? It's a new era in Ontario health care. Administration must provide a leaner service in order to cope with betrayal by the province. And those of us who use the hospital must cope, and cooperate. Locally, they're putting a positive spin on the closure: It's hoped that the seniors currently occupying chronic and acute care beds will be taken home at points during the holidays, even if it's only for daytime visits to help a depleted staff make ends meet. We hope the community will accept the proposal, and help administration at Community Memorial meet their goal. And for the future? ...It could be grim. As hospital CAO Dave Brown pointed out Friday, a cut of 5 per cent to the hospital's $6 million budget would represent $300,000; that's a large chunk of funding from a relatively small budget. We don't know yet just what the numbers will look like. But it could be a rough ride for the local hospital. To the Editor: fr ng The registration of guns will control nothing. of People who would consider using a gun v4 couldn't care less if the gun is registered or not. The one thing that will make a difference is more severe penalties; if they would only carry out their threats and enforce the laws already in place. A lot of people don't seem to realize that all handguns have to be registered now, but that hasn't stopped them from being used to rob and murder. PHOTO COURTESY SCUGOG SHORES MUSEUM VILLAGE Gun legislation accomplishes nothing This law seems to be more of a handout to Allen Rock's fellow lawyers than one to control guns. I feel sorry for Alex Shepherd on this matter. But as a member of the Liberal Party, he really hasn't got much say under the dictatorship of Jean Chretien. Alex tried; but under a Liberal or Conservative Party government, members of parliament have very little to say. The, old parties don't call for free votes, but prefer a dic- tator ahead of democracy.
