A---- {© St S.A | "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" _ PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 19, 1995 - 19 -- -------- SPORTS MoJacks grab two points with win over Merchants By Wally Donaldson Special to the Star Keith Leslie continues to pile up the points for the Port Perry Modacks this season - and he's receiving a lot of support. The tandem of Leslie, Todd Dennis and Steve Barkwell has set the pace in the Central Ontario Junior C Hockey League, comfortably sitting in the top three individual posi- tions. But Leslie, by his own admission, isn't necessari- ly eager to examine the scoresheet at the end of a game. He prefers to focus on the scoreboard. "We need the points to be successful, but it's not the points I get I'm inter- ested in, just the wins," beams the gifted sniper who, like Dennis, is an overager on the roster. "The guys look (to the line) to lead us offensively, especially Todd and I as the overagers. And that's IGA tourney action We headed to Keene Saturday, Dec. 16 for our first tournament of the year. We were on the ice at 10 a.m. for game one against a huge team called the Otonabee Wolves. We played end to end hockey the first period and it was a-good start. Unfortunately with 19 seconds left in the first period, the Wolves scored on us. In the second period, our defence played well but the Wolves went up 2-0 on a shot at 8:46. Jon Sanders got a breakaway at 6:56 and went it but the goalie stopped the shot. It was a hard hitting period as our guys were trying to stop the Wolves offensive playing style. Two more goals in the third at 8:43 and 3:51 left us trailing 5-0. Steve Martyn put in a good effort as did Nick Ostifucuk on defence. Mark Delaney had some great checks this game including a clean hip check that had the parents cheering. The IGA boys were back on the ice at 1 p.m. after grabbing some lunch. Game two was against All Saints from Peterborough. We came out recharged and played a great game. All Saints got on the board at 6:50 of the first, but we tied it up at 2:04 on a scram- ble in front of the net. Reid McTaggart on a backhand to the net scored with Pete McKitterick and Steve Martyn assisting. All Saints broke the tie in the second at 9:35 but we fought back with a goal by Joel Van Camp on passes from Chad Lance and Jon Sanders at 5:27. It was 2-2. Great defence work from Murphy Irvine, Lawrence Cook, Nick and Mark kept the game tight. Heading into the third, it was great entertainment and good hockey. Jeremy Pare, Kam Cooper and Ken Ellis were diggingin trying to get the tie breaking goal. Our forwards were giving it their best shots but at 3:04 All Saints got in deep and scored on us. Another goal with 38 seconds left went in our net and they had us 4-2. Great hustle in this game Chad, Ken and Reid. Chris Thompson made some good saves in both games against some good hockey players. We learned a few things this tournament. For ex- ample, how the body gets bruised when in contact with a goal post (Pete), how to play with no feeling in your feet (Kam) and how your head will ring if it comes in contact with a goal post (Jon). Even though we lost, we saw several smiles all day and the boys en- joyed the competition. Thanks to Dave Ellis for help- ing out on the bench. okay because we are play- ing well together. We seem to know where each other is, especially in the other end. We cycle it well." The top line was in fine form Sunday night, spark- ing the MoJacks to a 5-3 victory over a feisty Little Britain Merchants at Scu- gog Arena. One night earlier, the Merchants prevailed 3-2 over Port Perry in Little Britain. The loss, coupled with an earlier setback to Uxbridge, prompted Mo- Jacks' coach Chic Carne- gie to quip, "I'm glad we got a win here. When you go on a two-game losing streak, you get worried about a third." Certainly not on Sun- day, although the Mer- chants were given the key to the community on a few occasions, especially in the opening period while managing 18 shots. How- ever, the refinement of puckstopper Paul Roberts gave ModJacks an opportu- nity to earn two points. Merchants got on the board early in the game when Corby Purdy redi- rected a Darryl James slapshot while on the pow- er play. Dennis knotted the score on an excellent swooping motion from an acute angle. This was the frame where Roberts demon- strated his grit, challeng- ing the shooters and leav- ing a precious few rebounds. It was his first piece of action in four games with Rick Hutchin- son holding down the post. "Our goalie held us in. He played really well," said Carnegie. "Good goaltending will pick you up," adds Leslie.
