' Legionnaires defeat Stouffville squad 7-5 On Friday, Dec. 15 the Legionnaires played against Stouffville in Port Perry. The game started roll- ing when Matt MacMaster «passed the puck to Braden Tarbotton who quickly fired the puck over the Stouffville goalie's shoul- der. Then within a few minutes Dean Van Camp came charging across the ice and slipped the puck right into the net giving Port a 2-0lead. The pressure was kept up as the Legionnaires were hustling around the Stouffville net and Matt MacMaster came from be- hind the net and neatly tucked the puck into the net fromthe corner. With their first goal on the board the Stouffville team kept the pressure on and with less than two min- utes left in the first period scored again. At the beginning of the second period both teams carried the puck back and forth. Our defense mem- bers Grant Hooker, Tim Jones, Sean Jeffrey, Dave Justinsky and Carl Evans between the pipes never let up. Port continued to play "hard and then in front of the Stouffville net Dean Van Camp made a quick pass to Braden Tarbotton who made no mistake and sunk the puck into the net. G.l.C. With these two quick goals it fired up the Stouffville team and at the end of the second peri- od there was a scramble in front of the Legionnaire's aged to score. The third period started out flat but woke up as Ja- son Whitworth's great stick handling and deter- mination skated down the ice with the puck. He looked, he shot, he scored. Minutes later the Stouff- ville team scored. But our Jason was fired up and every eye was on him as he carried the puck down the ice and let a beauty shot go right over the Stouffville goalie's shoulder. Seconds later the Stouffville team scrambling in front of Port's net managed to score once more. The ac- tion packed game left the Legionnaires winning 7-5. The Legionnaire team and coaches wish every- one a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. ModJacks have playoff fever By Wally Donaldson There's nothing like the thrills of playoff atmosphere that brings out the best in athletes. At least, that's accord- ing to the sports gospel. And although the Port Perry Mo- Jacks have 15 games left to be played in their Central Ontario Junior C Hockey League schedule, Chic Carnegie is anx- jous to fill his dressing room of this playoff type of aroma as soon as possi- ble. He's wasting no time. "With four games in as many nights, that's about as close to the playoffs as: we're going to get right now and it's go- ing to be a good test for the kids," said the ModJacks skipper prior to last night's engagement at Scugog Arena against the Picton Pirates of the east- ern Ontario circuit. The MoJacks continue their heated pace prior to the new year with games in Picton tonight and Georgina on Fri- day night before playing host to the Lakefield Chiefs on Saturday evening. Perhaps spilling a little playoff en- thusiasm before Christmas, the Mo- Jacks surprised the Bruins 5-2 last Fri- day night in Uxbridge as newcomer Corey Bricknell set the pace with a two- goal effort. Bricknell's presence on and off the ice is beginning to pay off in big dividends. Not only is he a stalwart on the blue- line, the 20-year-old former member of the East Coast's Columbus Chill has re- fined his offensive skills on the front lines as well. Not to mention the "physi- cal" attributes he brings to the team. In- deed, the Port Perry native is leading by example and with playoffs looming... And then consider the awesome threesome of Keith Leslie, Todd Dennis and Steve Barkwell which is setting a torrid pace of its own. It gets balanced out down the line. Certainly the eventual return of Chad Kearns (wrist) and Kevin Vivian (shoul- der) can only enhance the lineup. "We are a team with an abundance of intensity," said Murray Parliament, the ModJack's longtime general manag- er, "We've got one line doing most of the scoring, but the other guys are capable of picking it up. It's happened many times before." Such was the case last Friday eve in Uxbridge when Carnegie and assistant Brett Puckrin had to deal with a short- ened bench. The absence of Mike Pi- geau, Todd Stirling and Paul Kelly, plus the eventual losses of Al Hurlburt and Trevor Bremner during the game prompted a hearty tug on the reins to two lines. "I was very pleased with the result," beamed Carnegie. "I thought we were a little flat in the first two periods. I asked the kids for a Christmas present and they knew what it was. We got the goals and a win." Bricknell is beginning to getin the flow of things, says Carnegie, although it took the two tilts against Little Brit- ain Merchants before setting the pace. "He's starting to feel more comforta- ble. Maybe he had felt when he got here he'd have to carry too much of the load. He wants to contribute to the team, that's for sure," he says. MoJacks have honed their skills in the scoring department throughout the campaign, focusing on a set system. Have they got the wheels to go the dis- tance, however? "Our speed will have to be right up there in order to compete against teams like Little Britain," says Carnegie.
