And the title has been made official with the announcement that Mrs. Morton, a teacher at Cartwright Central Public School for the past 28 years, has been chosen as one of 800 women across the country named Distinctive Canadian women, and included in the Who's Who in Canada listings. The honor is a tribute to a woman of diverse interests, and unflagging energy. .In addition to being an elementary school teacher, she is a gallery owner -- her M.R. Art shop is prominent in Bethany -- and promoter of Canadian artists, and allows the Bethany Outdoor Theatre to pitch its tent each summer on her century farm. She's a trustee with the Victoria county Board of Education, and one of the founding members of the Bethany Historical Society. And she was just the 11th woman in Canada to be qualified as a certified auctioneer. | It's that sort of resume that the judges Kathy Morton receives national honor who chose the 800 Distinctive Canadian women from among 27,000 nominees look for. "You have to have diverse interests, and be involved in community interests," she said while taking a break from her teaching duties at Cartwright recently. "It's not something you get overnight." Mrs. Morton looks back with pride on a number of her accomplishments, particularly in the arena of Canadian art, and her promotion of it. Many talented Canadian artists have what it takes to make it on the international scene, but need a promoter to help them along, she said. "They'd rather paint," she said. "The business side, the management side of it, is not their forte." That's not to say she does not insist of some business acumen on the part of artists. She insists that the artists recognize the markets, and adapt to them. ~ "A good, quality artist in my viewpoint is one who's got something saleable," she said, noting that the days of doling out grants to artists who work and live in isolation are probably gone forever. "The general public no longer, because of hard times, are going to tolerate that." The same approach -- you can call it common sense, if you want -- is applied to, the other loves in her life. Education, for instance: Mrs. Morton insists that a return to the fundamentals is necessary, and being demanded by parents and government alike. "The frivolousness just has to end," she said. "We (educators) have to do the job we are here to do. "I think we're going to get back to the basics; there's no question about that." As for awards? Well, she has to admit it's a heady experience to be among the likes of Olympian Marion Bedard, and astronaut Roberta Bondar. "When I was nominated, I just laughed," she said.
