18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 9, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SrorTs Atoms win championship Dec. 29 the Pineridge Sports Atoms traveled to Acton and came home with the championship. The team played very con- sistent in all three games. Game one saw the Pine- ridge squad faceoff against Plattsville and shut them out 4-0. Peter Konstantinopolous and Andrew Fancy shared the shutout. The Port team's first goal came from some strong forechecking by the line of Jesse Mullins, Stormy Wotton and Peirce Jones. Peirce Jones did the scoring from Stormy Wootton. This one goal lead held until the third period when the Pineridge squad turned on the power with Joey Lane scoring from Garrett Brown, then B.J. Schaump scored from Stuart Cochrane and Jus- tin Koury. Then on the same shift Justin Koury scored from B.J. Schaump. Game two saw Pine- ridge face a very strong Essa team. This was a very entertaining game with lots of scoring chanc- es and great goaltending. Essa took the lead with two minutes left in the first period. Port tied the game 20 seconds later when Tyler Lee deflected in a perfect pass from Joey Lane. Ryan Hnatko also got an assist. Essa again took the lead with 38 seconds left in the second period. After a rest and a flood the Pine- ridge squad came out fly- ing with Stuart Cochrane just over a minute into the - third to tie the score. B.J. Schaump and Justin Koury earned assists. Tight checking and great goaltending kept the game tied until Joey Lane scored on a breakaway with 2:17 remaining. Stormy Wootton got an as- sist on the play. Chris McKitterick put one in the empty net for a 4-2 final score. Game three the Pine- ridge Sports squad played the host Acton team. This game could have been a blowout if it was not for the Acton goalie. Besides his good goaltending he was lucky as our team hit four or five goalposts. Port got on the board first at 8:44 when Tyler Lee scored from Ryan Hnatko and Joey Lane. Acton tied the score 20 seconds later. Andrew Fancy played well in the Port net making many good saves before getting hurt after stop- ping a breakaway. Peter Konstantinopolous came in and shut Acton out the rest of the way. The winning goal came when Joey Lane banked one in off some legs. Tyler Lee got an assist. Joey Lane was named M.V.P. in the final game. (Al The tournament held a shootout with a shooter and goalie from each team. Jesse Mullins and Peter Konstantinopolous had very strong showings. Dec. 15 Port hosted Bowmanville for an exhi- bition game and tied 2-2. Peirce Jones scored unas- sisted and Ryan Hnatko from Joey Lane and Tyler Lee supplied the scoring for Port. Dec. 17 Pineridge trav- elled to Omemee and were handed an 8-6 loss. Justin Shinn had a big game for Port scoring four goals. Ryan Hnatko and Joey Lane also scored for Port. Getting assists were Jus- tin Koury, B.J. Schaump, Tyler Lee, Ryan Hnatko and Chris McKitterick. Dec. 21 Pineridge Sports hosted Manvers and came away with a 7-6 win. B.J. Schaump and Joey Lane led the way with two goals each. Other goalscorers were Stormy Wootton, Peirce Jones, and Tyler Lee. Getting helpers in the game were Stuart Cochrane with two, Peirce Jones, Stormy Wootton, Ryan Hnatko, Garrett Brown and Joey Lane. The Pineridge squad's defence of Wesley Lang- maid, Garrett Brown, Luke. Pilkey, Justin Shinn, Chris McKitterick and Tony Boomsma have played well lately just in time for playoffs. All three lines show scoring touch and goaltending is im- proving. Playoffs are com- ing just at the right time. Peewee Bs in Omemee This Sunday saw Gore- ski's Lakeside Resort Pee- wees travel to Omemee. The first period was fast paced and very evenly matched. Omemee opened the scoring with just seven seconds left on the clock to end the first period 1-0. Omemee didn't let up and scored shortly into the second period. Port's only goal was scored by Matt Cracknell unassisted to 'end the second period 2-1. Still a very close game. The third period was a see-saw battle with some really good checking and end to end action. With just 3:49 left on the clock, goals were scored on Port' to end the game 5-1. The boys play in Port Perry Friday night at 9:30 p.m. against Lindsay and then have a tdurnament this weekend in Beaverton. Good luck! the twine. gionnaires' skates. the puck again. 4-7 TET TTT TITLE Te. a Legionnaires win On Friday, Dec. 22 the Legionnaires hosted the LNHL Red Wings for a Port Perry beating. Port's first goal came when Braden Tarbotton feathered a beauty pass to Dane Gray to set up Mark Blakley for a goal. Then at the 7:00 mark, Dane passed to Jason Whit- worth to set up Blakley for his second of the evening. | The next goal came on a delayed penalty. Dean Van Camp was blazzing up the ice with Matt MacMaster to his right. Dean got the puck through the defence- men's feet over to Matt as he one-timed the puck into Throughout the whole game, Port's imported goal- tender Chris Evans played great for the shutout. Vet- eran goaltender Chris Monsma also played excellent in the pipes as he allowed just one goal, but the goal was not deserved by the Wings, as it hit one of the Le- Then when the first period was almost over Chris Skerratt, Steve Wygerde and Scott Brownson passed the puck around and saw Steve tuck her home. Early in the second the Wings were getting more hungry but were denied on some plays by Dave Justynski and Timothy Jones as they played the body well. Our first goal in the second started when Mark passed it right on the money to Jay and smoked it top corner. Then in a scramble in front "Deano" managed to yank it out to Braden as he let a slapshot go that nobody saw go by the goalie. Late in the second Grant Hooker stood up the Wings captain at the blue line, the kid never saw Great plays by Scott Stevens out there and he kills penalties exceptionally well (he's under rated). In the third period Braden scored his second goal assisted by Mark. Before the game had ended Mark Blakley got the hat trick. Well done Mark. Assists went to Jason Van Camp runners-up Dec. 28 the Van Camp Novice house league team treked north to Fenelon Falls for aone-day tournament. The first game against Sutton started fast as the boys had that early morning look in their eyes, but the look quickly vanished as the team stood around and watched themselves lose 9-1. Shawn McNamara got Van Camp's only goal banging home a loose puck from a bad angle. Kate Thompson was credited with an assist on the play. The second game was against Lind- say and the guys got their wake up call from coach Dunn with a spirited chat prior to the game. Port fell behind twice by a two-goal deficit but kept forecheck- ing and skating and tied the game at 7:51 of the last period. This set the stage for overtime and Port squeaked out the win with one sec- ond left in the overtime session. Brooks Taylor's third goal of the game was the winner with an assist going to Michael Aldred. The other goal came from Brad Layzell with an assist gong to Justin Cottrell. Also collecting game assists were Michael and Robbie Waller. This win put Van Camp into the Championship final against Sutton. This time the guys were determined to reverse the first game results and if not for some excellent goaltending by the Sutton goalie their efforts would have been rewarded with a victory. Sutton built up a 3-0 lead early in the third, but Por kept battling and Michael Aldred scored on a hard wrist shot to get Van Camp's only goal. From all accounts the team experi- enced a fun and exciting day. They act- ed as good ambassodors for the team as well as for the PPMHA. Most of all the boys acted like gentlemen which may have been their biggest win of the day. Well done guys.
