Scugog Council, yesterday, gave local riders two weeks to start abiding to the bylaw or they will be restricted to the lake and trails. To help snowmobilers stick to the regulations of the bylaw, the township has hired off-duty po- lice officers to charge offenders who contravene the bylaw. as well asliquor offences. Councillors received numer- ous calls from residents, partic- ularly in Ward 2 and Ward 5 over the holidays about snow- mobilers driving on lawns and sidewalks. The hardest hit areas have been the waterfront condomin- iums, Apple Valley, Perry Glen, Victorian Village and the dow- town core. The calls had Ward 5 Council- lor Karen Puckrin reluctantly call for a ban of all snowmobiles in Port Perry, with the excep- tion of the trail that leads be- hind Flieler's Petro Canada. Regional Councillor Marilyn Pearce suggested that council give snowmobilers a two-week reprieve before banning the sport. Councillor Pearce, was also reluctant to ban the ma- chines, but said council has to do something to enforce the by- law. If the privilege is still being abused in two weeks time, the next scheduled council meeting, sleds will be banned from the town, council warned. A&P mum oh a hew Port store By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Port Perry is among the sites being considered for a new A&P supermarket, but compa- ny officials won't yet confirm the possibility of a store open- ing here soon. Bill Sheine, vice-president of marketing for the huge supermarket chain, did say though that it's a possibility Port could see a new store set- ting up shop in the future. A&P is currently scouting a number of locations for new Food Basics stores, a no-frills spin-off of its regular opera- tions. Speculation has run high that A&P would take the oppor- tunity to open in Port, espe- cially since the shutdown of Dowson's Valu Mart at the beginning of January.
