The competition provided by the other teams was ex- pectedly tough since this was an "AA" tournament. Hard work, strong fore- checking, consistent back- checking, and good de- fence surprised Brampton in our first game. Jeff Tar- botton opened the scoring on a nice set-up trom Ja- mie Smith and Spencer Churchill. Kevin Robins fired home our second goal on a fine solo effort. Mi- chael Thompson scored our third goal on a great shot from his point posi- tion with assists going to Chet Martin and Jeff Tar- botton. The hard checking of forwards Geoff Simpson and Pat Lewis exemplified Auctioneers tie Pearce Auction Novice had a busy weekend with three away exhibition games. They started off in Unionville on Thursday, Jan. 4 to face the Mark- ham Waxers. Port Perry exhibited superb passing that enabled many scoring opportunities. A pretty tic- tac-toe play that was started by Tyson Savage to Cassidy Weber and then to Ashley Lucas who banged it home. Markham had their chances but sharp goal tending by Mark Carnaghan and Leo Taillon kept us on top. Danny Halward was in the right place at the right time to slide the puck in for Pearce Auction to make it 2-0. Later in the third period, Port Perry's Cassidy Weber popped in our next marker after a scramble in front of the Markham net. Ashley Lu- cas earned the assist. Our next contest was Saturday, Jan. 6 in Man- vers. Pearce Auction came out flying and Cassidy We- ber scored on his first shift after a nice set-up pass from Michael Lycett. Port Perry kept the pressure on to complete the period. To start the second, Ashley moved it over to Tyson Savage who set up Cas- sidy Weber again in front of the net to make it 2-0. Manvers scored their first goal before Jeff Tomcheski made it 3-1 for Port. Our gang thought they had this one in the bag but Manvers would have none of that. They picked up their game and came back to score three straight to surprise Port Perry. Kory Bauer passed the puck back to Derek Go- reski who let go a hard wrist shot from the blue line to beat the goalie. Der- ek also rang the puck off the crossbar and the goal- ost on other missiles rom the point. Beaverton - regained the two goal lead on a miscue in the Port Perry end. Pearce Auction came right back as Shane Jeffrey's point found its mark. Assists went to Danny Halward and Kyle Mullins. In the final min- ute, with our net empty for the extra attacker. Danny Hal- ward and Tyson Savage were rewarded with as- sists for their efforts. A gutsy. effort, led by big Mike, allowed Pearce Auc- tion to claw back for a tie. the effort of the entire team in this 3-1 victory. Not to be forgotten our goaltender, Scott Honey, turned in an excellent per- formance "between the pipes". This game proved the rewards of hard work and good positional play. Game two of the tourna- ment saw us pitted against our rivals from the south... Whitby. Mark Lott provided us with the solid effort in net that we re- quired. Unfortunately, we seemed to be a different team than the one that put Brampton in their place earlier that morning. The game ended 4-1 in favor of Whitby. Justin Moffatt scored our lone goal, nicely assisted by Jeff Tarbotton and Steven MacLennan. Sunday morning saw us back in Newmarket for our third game of the Tournament. We needed but a single point in order to advance to the semi- finals. It looked good when we scored early with Ke- vin Robbins banging in a rebound from Spencer Churchill. Owen Sound took full advantage of their opportunities and scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead. With time running out on our hopes Justin Moffatt scored on a fine effort from a break-out pass by Mark Duncan. With the score 3- 2 we were pressing to win that berth in the semi- finals. Our chances to ad- vance were "iced" with Owen Sounds' fourth goal. Derek Bond and Dylan Harper continued to pro- vide steady "stay-at-home defence" throughout the tournament. The Legionnaires started the tourna- ment facing a squad from Fenelon Falls. The Fenelon team came out look- ing like they were going to make a game of it and tested goalie Carl Evans early. However, the Legionnaires quickly took over and romped to a 7-0 shutout. Braden Tarbotton, game MVP, scored a hat trick in the game on assists from Matt MacMaster (two), Dean Van Camp (two), and Dave Justynski (one). The line of Jason Whitworth, Mark Blakely and Dane Gray also had a good game as Jason scored two goals on as- sists from Mark (two), Dane (one), and Sean Jeffrey (one). Dane scored when he followed Steve Wygerde to the net -| and potted his rebound. Justynski also assisted. Van Camp rounded out the scoring on a power play. Whitworth and Tarbotton assisted. Chris Skerratt and Scott Brownson both hustled and were rewarded with good scoring chances. The defensive squad of Sean Jeffrey, Tim Jones, Justynski and Grant Hook- er all controlled their defensive zone and assisted Carl Evans in recording his shutout. Game two proved to be a frustrating affair for our Peewees. Despite out shooting their Newmarket opponents, we came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 score. Two Port goals were called back, which made the final score even worse. Chris Monsma was between the pipes fot the loss and turned away numerous shots. The Port boys had their chances but could not dent the mesh more than twice, with the second goal coming with one second left in the game. MacMaster scored our first goal on a goalmouth scramble. Tarbotton and Jeffrey assisted. This gave Port Perry a 1-0 lead, but Newmarket tied it 1-1 at the end of the first. Port had a chance to pull ahead when they started the second period on a pow- er play. They had quite a few good scor- ing opportunities but hit the goalie eve- ry time. Unfortunately, after our squad had gotten caught on a long shift, New- market scored to pull ahead 2-1. In the third, Port tried hard to create Peewees finalists at tourney Port Perry "Legionnaires" Peewee A scoring chances but Newmarket iced the game with their third goal. Port Perry had one more shot at it when Newmarket took a penalty and Port added an extra attacker. With one sec- ond left in the game, Van Camp scored on assists by Tarbotton and Wygerde. It was too late and Newmarket recorded a 3-2win. ; The next day, the Legionnaires took the ice for their third game. The team still had a chance to make it to the semi- finals if they defeated Pickering by a good margin. The boys came out and proceeded to do just that as they elimi- nated Pickering 5-0. Monsma recorded the shutout. MacMaster had a big game as he scored two on assists from Braden (one), Tim (one); Pear (one), and Scott (one). Van Camp had opened the scor- ing on a nice wrist shot! Mark assisted. Wygerde poked one in during a scram- ble. Grant and Chris S. assisted. Brownson closed out the scoring on a wrist shot after getting an assist from Chris S. and Steve. This win put the Legionnaires into a semi-final game against Ennismore at 7:50 a.m. Sunday morning. It was evi- dent that the hour was too early for both teams as play was sluggish in both ends of the rink. The line of Tarbotton, Van Camp and MacMaster had a couple of early chances and at 6:36 of the first, Whitworth tucked in a rebound from a point shot by Jeffrey. Van Camp also had an assist. This proved to be the only goal of the game, in part by the spark- ling play of Evans who helped Port pre- serve their slim 1-0 lead. The penalty killing units also played a big part. This moved the Legionnaires into the "A" championship against a smooth Owen Sound team. Our squad started the game on fire with some good scoring chances. However, a tipped puck at the blue line resulted in an Owen Sound 2- on-1 and goalie, Monsma didn't have a chance on a beauty tip in. Owen Sound skated to a 4-0 win. Our Port boys con- tinued to try hard but some good saves by the Owen Sound goalie kept them off the board. This was the seventh game in less than 72 hours. Their next home game is Saturday, Jan. 13 at 5 p.m. against Cobourg.
