- Scugog all set for weekend of winter activities By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Downtown Port Perry will see a flurry of activity this weekend as snowmo- bilers and sled dog racers move into town. Queen Street will be blocked off Friday night to prepare for the Kinsmen Club's third annual Sled Dog Derby. The races will get underway at noon Sat- urday. Spectators can view the races from the Latcham Centre or the lake. The dogs will travel from the |¢ Latcham Centre to the lake, turning north along the west shoreline. The continuance of the course will include Canterbury Common land and the Castle Harbor area. Due to safety reasons specta- tors are not permitted to this area of the course. Spectators are also re- minded not to bring their dogs to the races, for the safety of the riders, all dogs and spectators. The following day the Kinsmen Club, along with the local Siberian Husky Club of Central Ontario will put on an exhibition beginning at noon. Specta- tors can observe the dogs and ask questions con- cerning the sport. In conjuntion with the exhibition, two classes of childrens' races are planned. There will be a race: for nine and under, usingone dog and a 10 and over class using two dogs. Limited registration is available beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Munici- pal Building. A challenge has also been issued by the Kins- men Club to all service and sports groups to com- pete in the first three- person Sled Pull. The event will be held at the 2:30 p.m. with registra- tion beginning at 1:30. The competition will have two people pull the third team member on the sled from Perry to Water Street. Also on Sunday hun- dreds of snowmobilers are expected to arrive in town for Snowarama, which is returning to Scugog after along absence. Co-ordinator Marion Lee is preparing for at least 400 riders to take part in the January 21 run, which raises money annually for the Easter Seal Society. The event which will be- gin at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry beginning at +. The ride, which benefits Easter Seals, will benefit 15 local children including Lindsay and Nicholas. Please see story for more details on the ride. : 8 a.m. will sponsor 15 local children. : Snowmobilers have raised more than $12 mil- lion since 1975 for Easter Seals children. Locally the goal is to raise $5,000 dur- ing the 1996 event. Snowarama is being sponsored by CORSA (Central Ontario Region Snowmobile . Associa- tions), which is made up of five snowmobile clubs. Cartwright Dynos, The Heart of Ontario, Long Sault, Ganaraska and Port Perry Snowmobile Clubs are co-sponsoring the event. Sponsor sheets can still be picked up at any local snowmobile dealerships as well as at the Antrim House, Gord Lewis Mo- tors, Flieler's Petro- Canada and the Port Perry Star.
